Chapter 28

1 And it came1961 to pass in those1992 days,3117 that the Philistines6430 gathered6908 their armies4264 together for warfare,6635 to fight3898 with Israel.3478 And Achish397 said559 to David,1732 Know3045 you assuredly,3045 that you shall go3318 out with me to battle,4264 you and your men.582

2 And David1732 said559 to Achish,397 Surely3651 you shall know3045 what853 834 your servant5650 can do.6213 And Achish397 said559 to David,1732 Therefore will I make7760 you keeper8104 of my head7218 for ever.3605 3117

3 Now Samuel8050 was dead,4191 and all3605 Israel3478 had lamented5594 him, and buried6912 him in Ramah,7414 even in his own city.5892 And Saul7586 had put5493 away5493 those1992 that had familiar spirits,178 and the wizards,3049 out of the land.776

4 And the Philistines6430 gathered6908 themselves together, and came935 and pitched2583 in Shunem:7766 and Saul7586 gathered6908 all3605 Israel3478 together, and they pitched2583 in Gilboa.1533

5 And when Saul7586 saw7200 the host4264 of the Philistines,6430 he was afraid,3372 and his heart3820 greatly3966 trembled.2729

6 And when Saul7586 inquired7592 of the LORD,3068 the LORD3068 answered6030 him not, neither1571 by dreams,2472 nor1571 by Urim,224 nor1571 by prophets.5030

7 Then said559 Saul7586 to his servants,5650 Seek1245 me a woman802 that has1172 a familiar spirit,178 that I may go3212 to her, and inquire1875 of her. And his servants5650 said559 to him, Behold,2009 there is a woman802 that has1172 a familiar spirit178 at Endor.5874

8 And Saul7586 disguised2664 himself, and put3847 on other312 raiment,899 and he went,3212 and two8147 men582 with him, and they came935 to the woman802 by night:3915 and he said,559 I pray4994 you, divine7080 to me by the familiar spirit,178 and bring5927 me him up, whom853 834 I shall name559 to you.

9 And the woman802 said559 to him, Behold,2009 you know3045 what853 834 Saul7586 has done,6213 how he has cut3772 off those that have familiar spirits,178 and the wizards,3049 out of the land:776 why4100 then lay you a snare5367 for my life,5315 to cause me to die?4191

10 And Saul7586 swore7650 to her by the LORD,3068 saying,559 As the LORD3068 lives,2416 there shall no518 punishment5771 happen7136 to you for this2088 thing.1697

11 Then said559 the woman,802 Whom853 4310 shall I bring5927 up to you? And he said,559 Bring5927 me up Samuel.8050

12 And when the woman802 saw7200 Samuel,8050 she cried2199 with a loud1419 voice:6963 and the woman802 spoke559 to Saul,7586 saying,559 Why4100 have you deceived7411 me? for you are Saul.7586

13 And the king4428 said559 to her, Be not afraid:3372 for what4100 saw7200 you? And the woman802 said559 to Saul,7586 I saw7200 gods430 ascending5927 out of the earth.776

14 And he said559 to her, What4100 form8389 is he of? And she said,559 An old2205 man376 comes5927 up; and he is covered5844 with a mantle.4598 And Saul7586 perceived3045 that it was Samuel,8050 and he stooped6915 with his face639 to the ground,776 and bowed7812 himself.

15 And Samuel8050 said559 to Saul,7586 Why4100 have you disquieted7264 me, to bring5927 me up? And Saul7586 answered,6030 I am sore3966 distressed;6887 for the Philistines6430 make war3898 against me, and God430 is departed5493 from me, and answers6030 me no3808 more, neither1571 by prophets,5030 nor1571 by dreams:2472 therefore I have called7121 you, that you may make known3045 to me what4100 I shall do.6213

16 Then said559 Samuel,8050 Why4100 then do you ask7592 of me, seeing the LORD3068 is departed5493 from you, and is become1961 your enemy?6145

17 And the LORD3068 has done6213 to him, as he spoke1696 by me: for the LORD3068 has rent7167 the kingdom4467 out of your hand,3027 and given5414 it to your neighbor,7453 even to David:1732

18 Because834 you obeyed8085 not the voice6963 of the LORD,3068 nor3808 executed6213 his fierce2740 wrath639 on Amalek,6002 therefore5921 3651 has the LORD3068 done6213 this2088 thing1697 to you this2088 day.3117

19 Moreover1571 the LORD3068 will also1571 deliver5414 Israel3478 with you into the hand3027 of the Philistines:6430 and to morrow4279 shall you and your sons1121 be with me: the LORD3068 also1571 shall deliver5414 the host4264 of Israel3478 into the hand3027 of the Philistines.6430

20 Then Saul7586 fell5307 straightway4116 all4393 along4393 6967 on the earth,776 and was sore3966 afraid,3372 because of the words1697 of Samuel:8050 and there was no3808 strength3581 in him; for he had eaten398 no3808 bread3899 all3605 the day,3117 nor all3605 the night.3915

21 And the woman802 came935 to Saul,7586 and saw7200 that he was sore3966 troubled,926 and said559 to him, Behold,2009 your handmaid8198 has obeyed8085 your voice,6963 and I have put7760 my life5315 in my hand,3709 and have listened8085 to your words1697 which834 you spoke1696 to me.

22 Now6258 therefore, I pray4994 you, listen8085 you also1571 to the voice6963 of your handmaid,8198 and let me set7760 a morsel6595 of bread3899 before6440 you; and eat,398 that you may have strength,3581 when3588 you go3212 on your way.1870

23 But he refused,3985 and said,559 I will not eat.398 But his servants,5650 together with the woman,802 compelled6555 him; and he listened8085 to their voice.6963 So he arose6965 from the earth,776 and sat3427 on the bed.4296

24 And the woman802 had a fat4770 calf5695 in the house;1004 and she hurried,4116 and killed2076 it, and took3947 flour,7058 and kneaded3888 it, and did bake644 unleavened4682 bread thereof:

25 And she brought5066 it before6440 Saul,7586 and before6440 his servants;5650 and they did eat.398 Then they rose6965 up, and went3212 away that night.3915

Chapter 28

1 AND it came to pass in those days, the Philistines gathered their armies together in the valley for war to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, Know assuredly that you shall go out with me to the host, you and your men.Samuel 291 NOW the Philistines gathered together all their armies at Aphek; and the Israelites were encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel.

2 And David said to Achish, Surely you shall know what your servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore I will make you my bodyguard forever. And the lords of the Philistines were passing in review by hundreds and by thousands; but David and his men marched in the rear with Achish.

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned over him and buried him in Ramtha in his own sepulchre. And Saul had put away the diviners and the wizards out of the land. Then the princes of the Philistines said to Achish, Why are these men marching here? And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, This is David, the servant of Saul, the king of Israel, who has been with us a year and some months, and I have found no fault in him from the day he came to me until this day.

4 And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shechem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilgal. But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; and they said to him, Drive this fellow out of the camp, that he may return to his place which you have assigned him; and let him not go with us to the battle, lest he be an adversary to us there; for how could this man reconcile himself to his lord, except with our heads?

5 And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. Is not this David, of whom the daughters of Israel sang one to another with timbrels, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands?

6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, he did not answer him, either by dreams or by fire or by prophets. Then Achish called David and said to him, As the LORD lives, you have been upright, and your coming in and your going out with me in the battle is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to us to this day; nevertheless you are not good in the sight of the lords.

7 Then Saul said to his servants, Seek me a woman who has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at Endor.Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.

8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other raiment, and he went and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and Saul said to her, Divine for me by the familiar spirit, and bring up for me him whom I shall tell you.And David said to Achish, But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day that I have come to you until this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9 And the woman said to him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has removed those who have familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land. Why then are you laying a snare for my life to cause me to be put to death? And Achish answered and said to David, I know that you are as good in my sight as an angel of God; but the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go with us to the battle.

10 And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, there shall no harm come upon you for this thing. Now therefore rise up early in the morning with your master's servants who came with you; and at daybreak, go on your way.

11 Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up to you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. So David and his men rose up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and she said to Saul, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul.

13 And the king said to her, Fear not; what do you see? And the woman said to Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

14 And he said to her, What is their appearance? And she said to him, An old man is coming up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and made obeisance.

15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines are making war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more although I have inquired by the prophets and also by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may tell me what I shall do.

16 Then Samuel said to Saul, Why do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has departed from you, and now he is with your neighbor David?

17 And the LORD has done to him, as he spoke by me; for he has rent asunder the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David;

18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day.

19 Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; the LORD also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

20 Then Saul fell straightway upon his face on the ground, and was exceedingly afraid because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all that day, nor all that night.

21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in your hand, and have listened to the words which you spoke to me.

22 Now therefore, listen also to the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, because you are going on a journey.

23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, begged him; and he hearkened to their voice. So he arose from the ground and sat upon the bed.

24 Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she made haste and killed it, and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread;

25 And she brought it before Saul and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up and went away that night.

5 And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. Is not this David, of whom the daughters of Israel sang one to another with timbrels, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands?

6 And when Saul7586 inquired7592 of the LORD,3068 the LORD3068 answered6030 him not, neither1571 by dreams,2472 nor1571 by Urim,224 nor1571 by prophets.5030

8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other raiment, and he went and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and Saul said to her, Divine for me by the familiar spirit, and bring up for me him whom I shall tell you.And David said to Achish, But what have I done? 9 And the woman said to him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has removed those who have familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land. 10 And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, there shall no harm come upon you for this thing. Now therefore rise up early in the morning with your master's servants who came with you; and at daybreak, go on your way.

11 Then said559 the woman,802 Whom853 4310 shall I bring5927 up to you? And he said,559 Bring5927 me up Samuel.8050

11 Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up to you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. So David and his men rose up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

12 And when the woman802 saw7200 Samuel,8050 she cried2199 with a loud1419 voice:6963 and the woman802 spoke559 to Saul,7586 saying,559 Why4100 have you deceived7411 me? for you are Saul.7586

12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and she said to Saul, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul.

13 And the king4428 said559 to her, Be not afraid:3372 for what4100 saw7200 you? And the woman802 said559 to Saul,7586 I saw7200 gods430 ascending5927 out of the earth.776

13 And the king said to her, Fear not; what do you see? And the woman said to Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

14 And he said to her, What is their appearance? And she said to him, An old man is coming up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and made obeisance.

16 Then said559 Samuel,8050 Why4100 then do you ask7592 of me, seeing the LORD3068 is departed5493 from you, and is become1961 your enemy?6145

16 Then Samuel said to Saul, Why do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has departed from you, and now he is with your neighbor David?

17 And the LORD3068 has done6213 to him, as he spoke1696 by me: for the LORD3068 has rent7167 the kingdom4467 out of your hand,3027 and given5414 it to your neighbor,7453 even to David:1732

17 And the LORD has done to him, as he spoke by me; for he has rent asunder the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David;

18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day.

19 Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me; the LORD also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

20 Then Saul fell straightway upon his face on the ground, and was exceedingly afraid because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all that day, nor all that night.

21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in your hand, and have listened to the words which you spoke to me.

22 Now therefore, listen also to the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, because you are going on a journey.

23 But he refused,3985 and said,559 I will not eat.398 But his servants,5650 together with the woman,802 compelled6555 him; and he listened8085 to their voice.6963 So he arose6965 from the earth,776 and sat3427 on the bed.4296

23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, begged him; and he hearkened to their voice. So he arose from the ground and sat upon the bed.

24 And the woman802 had a fat4770 calf5695 in the house;1004 and she hurried,4116 and killed2076 it, and took3947 flour,7058 and kneaded3888 it, and did bake644 unleavened4682 bread thereof:

24 Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she made haste and killed it, and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread;

25 And she brought5066 it before6440 Saul,7586 and before6440 his servants;5650 and they did eat.398 Then they rose6965 up, and went3212 away that night.3915

25 And she brought it before Saul and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up and went away that night.
