Chapter 32

1 After310 these428 things,1697 and the establishment571 thereof, Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 came,935 and entered935 into Judah,3063 and encamped2583 against5921 the fenced1219 cities,5892 and thought559 to win1234 them for himself.

2 And when Hezekiah2396 saw7200 that Sennacherib5576 was come,935 and that he was purposed6440 to fight4421 against5921 Jerusalem,3389

3 He took counsel3289 with his princes8269 and his mighty1368 men to stop5640 the waters4325 of the fountains5869 which834 were without2351 the city:5892 and they did help5826 him.

4 So there was gathered6908 much7227 people5971 together, who stopped5640 all3605 the fountains,4599 and the brook5158 that ran7857 through8432 the middle8432 of the land,776 saying,559 Why4100 should the kings4428 of Assyria804 come,935 and find4672 much7227 water?4325

5 Also he strengthened2388 himself, and built1129 up all3605 the wall2346 that was broken,6555 and raised5927 it up to the towers,4026 and another312 wall2346 without,2351 and repaired2388 Millo4407 in the city5892 of David,1732 and made6213 darts7973 and shields4043 in abundance.7230

6 And he set5414 captains8269 of war4421 over5921 the people,5971 and gathered6908 them together to him in the street7339 of the gate8179 of the city,5892 and spoke1696 comfortably5921 3824 to them, saying,559

7 Be strong2388 and courageous,553 be not afraid3372 nor408 dismayed2865 for the king4428 of Assyria,804 nor for all3605 the multitude1995 that is with him: for there be more7227 with us than with him:

8 With him is an arm2220 of flesh;1320 but with us is the LORD3068 our God430 to help5826 us, and to fight3898 our battles.4421 And the people5971 rested5564 themselves on the words1697 of Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah.3063

9 After310 this2088 did Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 send7971 his servants5650 to Jerusalem,3389 (but he himself1931 laid siege against5921 Lachish,3923 and all3605 his power4475 with him,) to Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah,3063 and to all3605 Judah3063 that were at Jerusalem,3389 saying,559

10 Thus3541 said559 Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria,804 Where on5921 4100 do you trust,982 that you abide3427 in the siege4692 in Jerusalem?3389

11 Does not Hezekiah2396 persuade5496 you to give5414 over yourselves to die4191 by famine7458 and by thirst,6772 saying,559 The LORD3068 our God430 shall deliver5337 us out of the hand3709 of the king4428 of Assyria?804

12 Has not the same1931 Hezekiah2396 taken5493 away5493 his high1116 places and his altars,4196 and commanded559 Judah3063 and Jerusalem,3389 saying,559 You shall worship7812 before6440 one259 altar,4196 and burn6999 incense6999 on it?

13 Know3045 you not what4100 I and my fathers1 have done6213 to all3605 the people5971 of other lands?776 were the gods430 of the nations1471 of those lands776 any ways able3201 to deliver5337 their lands776 out of my hand?3027

14 Who4310 was there among all3605 the gods430 of those428 nations1471 that my fathers1 utterly destroyed,2763 that could3201 deliver5337 his people5971 out of my hand,3027 that your God430 should be able3201 to deliver5337 you out of my hand?3027

15 Now6258 therefore let not Hezekiah2396 deceive5377 you, nor408 persuade5496 you on this2063 manner, neither408 yet believe539 him: for no3808 god433 of any3605 nation1471 or kingdom4467 was able3201 to deliver5337 his people5971 out of my hand,3027 and out of the hand3027 of my fathers:1 how637 much637 3588 less shall your God430 deliver5337 you out of my hand?3027

16 And his servants5650 spoke1696 yet5750 more against5921 the LORD3068 God,430 and against5921 his servant5650 Hezekiah.2396

17 He wrote3789 also letters5612 to rail2778 on the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 and to speak559 against5921 him, saying,559 As the gods430 of the nations1471 of other lands776 have not delivered5337 their people5971 out of my hand,3027 so3651 shall not the God430 of Hezekiah2396 deliver5337 his people5971 out of my hand.3027

18 Then they cried7121 with a loud1419 voice6963 in the Jews'3066 speech3066 to the people5971 of Jerusalem3389 that were on5921 the wall,2346 to affright3372 them, and to trouble926 them; that they might take3920 the city.5892

19 And they spoke1696 against413 the God430 of Jerusalem,3389 as against5921 the gods430 of the people5971 of the earth,776 which were the work4639 of the hands3027 of man.120

20 And for this2063 cause Hezekiah2396 the king,4428 and the prophet5030 Isaiah3470 the son1121 of Amoz,531 prayed6419 and cried2199 to heaven.8064

21 And the LORD3068 sent7971 an angel,4397 which cut3582 off all3605 the mighty1368 men of valor,2428 and the leaders5057 and captains8269 in the camp4264 of the king4428 of Assyria.804 So he returned7725 with shame1322 of face6440 to his own land.776 And when he was come935 into the house1004 of his god,430 they that came3329 forth3329 of his own bowels4578 slew5307 him there8033 with the sword.2719

22 Thus the LORD3068 saved3467 Hezekiah2396 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 from the hand3027 of Sennacherib5576 the king4428 of Assyria,804 and from the hand3027 of all3605 other, and guided5095 them on every5437 side.5439

23 And many7227 brought935 gifts4503 to the LORD3068 to Jerusalem,3389 and presents4030 to Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah:3063 so that he was magnified5375 in the sight5869 of all3605 nations1471 from thereafter.310 3651

24 In those1992 days3117 Hezekiah2396 was sick2470 to the death,4191 and prayed6419 to the LORD:3068 and he spoke559 to him, and he gave5414 him a sign.4159

25 But Hezekiah2396 rendered7725 not again7725 according to the benefit1576 done to him; for his heart3820 was lifted1361 up: therefore there was wrath7110 on him, and on Judah3063 and Jerusalem.3389

26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah2396 humbled3665 himself for the pride1363 of his heart,3820 both he and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem,3389 so that the wrath7110 of the LORD3068 came935 not on them in the days3117 of Hezekiah.2396

27 And Hezekiah2396 had1961 exceeding3966 much7235 riches6239 and honor:3519 and he made6213 himself treasuries214 for silver,3701 and for gold,2091 and for precious3368 stones,68 and for spices,1314 and for shields,4043 and for all3605 manner of pleasant2532 jewels;3627

28 Storehouses4543 also for the increase8393 of corn,1715 and wine,8492 and oil;3323 and stalls723 for all3605 manner of beasts,929 and cotes220 for flocks.5739

29 Moreover he provided6213 him cities,5892 and possessions4735 of flocks6629 and herds1241 in abundance:7230 for God430 had given5414 him substance7399 very3966 much.7227

30 This1931 same1931 Hezekiah2396 also stopped5640 the upper5945 watercourse4161 4325 of Gihon,1521 and brought3474 it straight3474 down4295 to the west4628 side of the city5892 of David.1732 And Hezekiah2396 prospered6743 in all3605 his works.4639

31 However,3651 in the business of the ambassadors3887 of the princes8269 of Babylon,894 who sent7971 to him to inquire1875 of the wonder4159 that was done in the land,776 God430 left5800 him, to try5254 him, that he might know3045 all3605 that was in his heart.3824

32 Now the rest3499 of the acts1697 of Hezekiah,2396 and his goodness,2617 behold,2009 they are written3789 in the vision2377 of Isaiah3470 the prophet,5030 the son1121 of Amoz,531 and in the book5612 of the kings4428 of Judah3063 and Israel.3478

33 And Hezekiah2396 slept7901 with his fathers,1 and they buried6912 him in the most chief4608 of the sepulchers6913 of the sons1121 of David:1732 and all3605 Judah3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 did6213 him honor3519 at his death.4194 And Manasseh4519 his son1121 reigned4427 in his stead.8478

Chapter 32

1 AFTER these things and the faithful acts which Hezekiah did, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to their inhabitants, Give me a pledge and come to me.

2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib king of Assyria and his armies had come to fight against Jerusalem,

3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to conceal the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they did help him.

4 So there was gathered a great multitude of the people of Israel together, who concealed all the fountains and the great brooks that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come and find much water.

5 They also strengthened themselves and built up one wall opposite the other and polluted the canal which David had constructed. And Hezekiah made weapons, shields, and spears in abundance.

6 And he set captains of war over the people, each one over ten, and gathered them together to him in the market place of the city, and spoke to all of them, saying.

7 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed in the presence of the king of Assyria, nor in the presence of all the armies that have come with him; for there is more with us than with him:

8 With him is an arm of flesh; with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people were encouraged with the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent Rab-shakey together with his servants, and they came to Jerusalem (but he himself was besieging Lachish, and all his commanders with him) to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,

10 Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On whom are you trusting, that you remain in Jerusalem during the siege?

11 Hezekiah is deceiving you that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, and moreover he is misleading you, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hands of the king of Assyria.

12 Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and altars, and commanded Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before one altar and burn incense upon it?

13 Perhaps you know what I and my fathers have done to all the people of other lands? And the gods of nations of those lands were not able to deliver their lands out of my hand.

14 Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that the LORD should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

15 Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you nor make you to trust in this, and do not believe him; for your God will not be able to deliver you out of my hand; for all nations and kingdoms have not been able to deliver their cities out of my hand, and out of the hands of my fathers; your God also will not be able to deliver you out of my hand.

16 And his servants spoke these things before the LORD God of Israel and in the presence of his servant Hezekiah.

17 And he wrote letters to revile the LORD God of Israel, and to speak to the people of Israel, saying, As the gods of the nations of these lands were unable to deliver their cities out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah be able to deliver his city out of my hand.

18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language to the people who were seated on the wall of Jerusalem, to frighten them and to trouble them, that they might capture the wall of the city.

19 And they spoke in the name of the gods of the people of the earth and also in the name of the God of Jerusalem, imploring him to reward them according to the work of their hands.

20 Then Hezekiah and Isaiah the son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed because of this, and the LORD heard the voice of their prayer.

21 And the LORD sent an angel from before him, who smote all the mighty men of valour and the kings and the princes who were in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned in disgrace to his own land. And when he came into the house of his gods, his sons, who came forth of his own loins, slew him there with the sword.

22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hands of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all of those who invaded their borders.

23 And many of the children of Israel brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem, and gave presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted before all nations.

24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to death, and he prayed before the LORD and said, Thou hast performed mighty miracles for me and thou hast rewarded me according to the works of my hands.

25 And the sickness of Hezekiah was due to the pride of his heart; therefore the wrath of the LORD came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

26 But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 And Hezekiah had exceeding great wealth and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of pleasant vessels;

28 Storehouses also for the increase of grain and wine and oil; and stalls for all kinds of beasts;

29 And folds for herds and for flocks, and for oxen and other beasts; for the LORD had given him very much substance.

30 This same Hezekiah also buried the outlet for the waters of the upper spring and brought it straight down to the western cistern of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

31 And he sought the law of the LORD, as it was given in the land, and the LORD knew all that was in his heart.

32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness and his excellent ways, behold, they are written in the prophecy of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death, and they returned to Jerusalem. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

1 AFTER these things and the faithful acts which Hezekiah did, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to their inhabitants, Give me a pledge and come to me.

2 And when Hezekiah2396 saw7200 that Sennacherib5576 was come,935 and that he was purposed6440 to fight4421 against5921 Jerusalem,3389

2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib king of Assyria and his armies had come to fight against Jerusalem,

3 He took counsel3289 with his princes8269 and his mighty1368 men to stop5640 the waters4325 of the fountains5869 which834 were without2351 the city:5892 and they did help5826 him.

3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to conceal the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they did help him.

4 So there was gathered a great multitude of the people of Israel together, who concealed all the fountains and the great brooks that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come and find much water.

5 They also strengthened themselves and built up one wall opposite the other and polluted the canal which David had constructed. And Hezekiah made weapons, shields, and spears in abundance.

6 And he set5414 captains8269 of war4421 over5921 the people,5971 and gathered6908 them together to him in the street7339 of the gate8179 of the city,5892 and spoke1696 comfortably5921 3824 to them, saying,559

6 And he set captains of war over the people, each one over ten, and gathered them together to him in the market place of the city, and spoke to all of them, saying.

7 Be strong2388 and courageous,553 be not afraid3372 nor408 dismayed2865 for the king4428 of Assyria,804 nor for all3605 the multitude1995 that is with him: for there be more7227 with us than with him:

7 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed in the presence of the king of Assyria, nor in the presence of all the armies that have come with him; for there is more with us than with him:

8 With him is an arm2220 of flesh;1320 but with us is the LORD3068 our God430 to help5826 us, and to fight3898 our battles.4421 And the people5971 rested5564 themselves on the words1697 of Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah.3063

8 With him is an arm of flesh; with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people were encouraged with the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent Rab-shakey together with his servants, and they came to Jerusalem (but he himself was besieging Lachish, and all his commanders with him) to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying,

10 Thus3541 said559 Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria,804 Where on5921 4100 do you trust,982 that you abide3427 in the siege4692 in Jerusalem?3389

10 Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On whom are you trusting, that you remain in Jerusalem during the siege?

11 Does not Hezekiah2396 persuade5496 you to give5414 over yourselves to die4191 by famine7458 and by thirst,6772 saying,559 The LORD3068 our God430 shall deliver5337 us out of the hand3709 of the king4428 of Assyria?804

11 Hezekiah is deceiving you that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, and moreover he is misleading you, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hands of the king of Assyria.

12 Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and altars, and commanded Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before one altar and burn incense upon it?

13 Know3045 you not what4100 I and my fathers1 have done6213 to all3605 the people5971 of other lands?776 were the gods430 of the nations1471 of those lands776 any ways able3201 to deliver5337 their lands776 out of my hand?3027

13 Perhaps you know what I and my fathers have done to all the people of other lands? And the gods of nations of those lands were not able to deliver their lands out of my hand.

14 Who4310 was there among all3605 the gods430 of those428 nations1471 that my fathers1 utterly destroyed,2763 that could3201 deliver5337 his people5971 out of my hand,3027 that your God430 should be able3201 to deliver5337 you out of my hand?3027

14 Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that the LORD should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

15 Now6258 therefore let not Hezekiah2396 deceive5377 you, nor408 persuade5496 you on this2063 manner, neither408 yet believe539 him: for no3808 god433 of any3605 nation1471 or kingdom4467 was able3201 to deliver5337 his people5971 out of my hand,3027 and out of the hand3027 of my fathers:1 how637 much637 3588 less shall your God430 deliver5337 you out of my hand?3027

16 And his servants5650 spoke1696 yet5750 more against5921 the LORD3068 God,430 and against5921 his servant5650 Hezekiah.2396

16 And his servants spoke these things before the LORD God of Israel and in the presence of his servant Hezekiah.

17 And he wrote letters to revile the LORD God of Israel, and to speak to the people of Israel, saying, As the gods of the nations of these lands were unable to deliver their cities out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah be able to deliver his city out of my hand.

18 Then they cried7121 with a loud1419 voice6963 in the Jews'3066 speech3066 to the people5971 of Jerusalem3389 that were on5921 the wall,2346 to affright3372 them, and to trouble926 them; that they might take3920 the city.5892

18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language to the people who were seated on the wall of Jerusalem, to frighten them and to trouble them, that they might capture the wall of the city.

19 And they spoke1696 against413 the God430 of Jerusalem,3389 as against5921 the gods430 of the people5971 of the earth,776 which were the work4639 of the hands3027 of man.120

19 And they spoke in the name of the gods of the people of the earth and also in the name of the God of Jerusalem, imploring him to reward them according to the work of their hands.

20 And for this2063 cause Hezekiah2396 the king,4428 and the prophet5030 Isaiah3470 the son1121 of Amoz,531 prayed6419 and cried2199 to heaven.8064

20 Then Hezekiah and Isaiah the son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed because of this, and the LORD heard the voice of their prayer.
