Chapter 19

1 AND told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had slain all the prophets of Baal and the prophets of the shrines with the sword.

2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.

3 And Elijah was afraid, and he arose and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his disciple there.

4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under an oak tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough for me; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

5 Then he lay down and slept soundly under the oak tree; and, behold, an angel touched him and said to him, Arise and eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and lay down again.

7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time and touched him and said, Arise, eat and drink; because the journey is too great for you.

8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he entered into a cave and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah?

10 And he said, I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

11 And he said, Go forth and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice to him, and said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah?

14 And he said, I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts, because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 And the LORD said to him, Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; then go and anoint Hazael to be king over Aram;

16 And Jehu the son of Jamshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.

17 And it shall come to pass, that him who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.

19 So he departed thence and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, and twelve ploughs were ahead of him, and he was one of the twelve; and Elijah came up to him and cast his mantle upon him.

20 And he left the plough and the oxen and went after Elijah and said to him, Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you. And he said to him, Go back again; for what have I done to you?

21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slew them and boiled their meat with wood from the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and ministered to him.

4 Er aber ging1980 hin in die Wüste4057 eine259 Tagreise; und kam935 hinein und setzte sich3427 unter einen3117 Wacholder7574 und bat7592, daß seine See LE5315 stürbe4191, und sprach559: Es ist3947 genug7227; nimm nun, HErr3068, meine See LE5315! Ich bin nicht besser2896 denn meine Väter1.

5 Und legte sich7901 und schlief3462 unter dem259 Wacholder7574. Und siehe, der Engel4397 rührete ihn und sprach559 zu ihm: Stehe auf6965 und iß398!

6 Und er sah sich um, und siehe5027, zu seinen Häupten4763 lag ein geröstet Brot5692 und eine Kanne6835 mit Wasser4325. Und da er gegessen398 und getrunken8354 hatte, legte er sich wieder7725 schlafen7901.

7 Und der Engel4397 des HErrn3068 kam5060 zum andernmal8145 wieder7725 und rührete ihn und sprach559: Stehe auf6965 und iß398; denn du hast einen großen7227 Weg1870 vor dir.

8 Und er stund auf6965 und aß398 und trank8354; und ging3212 durch Kraft3581 derselben Speise396 vierzig705 Tage3117 und vierzig705 Nächte3915 bis an den Berg2022 Gottes430 Horeb2722.

9 Und kam935 daselbst in eine Höhle4631 und blieb daselbst über Nacht3885. Und siehe, das Wort1697 des HErrn3068 kam zu ihm und sprach559 zu ihm: Was machst du hie, Elia452?

10 Er sprach559: Ich habe7065 geeifert7065 um den HErrn3068, den GOtt430 Zeboath; denn die Kinder1121 Israel3478 haben deinen Bund1285 verlassen5800 und deine Altäre4196 zerbrochen2040 und deine Propheten5030 mit dem Schwert2719 erwürget2026; und ich bin allein überblieben, und sie stehen1245 danach, daß sie mir mein Leben5315 nehmen3947.

11 Er sprach559: Gehe5674 heraus und tritt auf5975 den Berg2022 vor6440 den HErrn. Und siehe, der HErr3068 ging3318 vorüber, und ein großer1419, starker2389 Wind7307, der die Berge2022 zerriß6561 und die Felsen5553 zerbrach7665, vor dem HErrn her; der HErr aber war nicht7307 im Winde. Nach310 dem Winde aber kam ein Erdbeben7494; aber der HErr war nicht7307 im Erdbeben7494.

12 Und nach310 dem Erdbeben7494 kam ein Feuer784; aber der HErr3068 war nicht im Feuer784. Und nach310 dem Feuer784 kam ein still sanftes1851 Sausen6963.

15 Aber der HErr3068 sprach559 zu ihm: Gehe3212 wiederum7725 deines Weges1870 durch935 die Wüste4057 gen Damaskus1834; und geh hinein und salbe4886 Hasael2371 zum Könige4428 über Syrien758

16 und Jehu3058, den Sohn1121 Nimsis5250, zum Könige4428 über Israel3478 und Elisa477, den Sohn1121 Saphats8202, von Abel-Mehola65, zum Propheten5030 an deiner Statt.

17 Und soll geschehen, daß3058, wer dem Schwert2719 Hasaels2371 entrinnet, den soll Jehu3058 töten4191, und wer dem Schwert2719 Jehus entrinnet den soll Elisa477 töten4191.

18 Und7651 ich will lassen7604 überbleiben siebentausend in Israel3478, nämlich alle Kniee1290, die sich3766 nicht gebeuget haben vor Baal1168, und allen Mund6310, der ihn nicht geküsset hat5401.

19 Und er ging5674 von dannen und fand4672 Elisa477, den Sohn1121 Saphats8202, daß er pflügete mit zwölf6240 Jochen6776 vor sich hin3212; und er war selbst unter den Zwölfen. Und Elia452 ging zu ihm und warf7993 seinen Mantel155 auf6440 ihn.

20 Er7323 aber ließ5800 die Rinder1241 und lief Elia452 nach310 und sprach559: Laß mich meinen Vater1 und meine Mutter517 küssen5401, so will ich dir310 nachfolgen. Er sprach559 zu ihm: Gehe3212 hin3212 und komm wieder7725; denn ich habe6213 etwas mit dir zu tun.
