Chapter 7

1 THEN Nedo-baal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Hadar; and the camp of Midian was north of the hill of Gibath, in the valley.

2 And the LORD said to Gideon, The people that are with you are too many for me to deliver the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel should glory in themselves, saying, My own hand has made me victorious.

3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him stay behind and return from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

4 And the LORD said to Gideon, The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will try them for you there; and it shall be that he of whom I say to you, This one shall go with you, the same shall go with you; and of whomsoever I say to you, This one shall not go with you, the same shall not go.

5 So he brought down the people to the water; and the LORD said to Gideon, All who lap of the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, you shall make them stand together; likewise all who kneel down upon their knees to drink, you shall make them stand together.

6 And the number of those that lapped, putting the hand to the mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people knelt down upon their knees to drink water.

7 And the LORD said to Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hands; and let all the other people go, every man to his place.

8 So the people took their provisions in their hands and their trumpets; and he dismissed all the children of Israel every man to his possession and to his tent, and he relied upon those three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

9 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said to him, Arise, go down to the camp, for I have delivered it into your hands.

10 But if you fear to go down, go down with Pera your servant to the army camp;

11 And you shall hear what they say; and afterwards your hands shall be strengthened. So he went down with Pera his servant to a detachment of the armed men that were in the army camp.

12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the Rakimites lay along the valley like locusts in multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.

13 And when Gideon was come, behold, a man was relating a dream to his fellow, and he said to him, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came as far as a tent, and struck it on the top, and the tent fell down.

14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, the mighty man of Israel; for into his hand has God delivered the camp of Midian.

15 Now when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshipped and returned to the camp of Israel, and said, Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hands.

16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.

17 And he said to them, Watch me and do as I do; and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, as I do, so shall you do.

18 When I blow a trumpet, I and all the people who are with me, then you blow with trumpets also on every side of the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

19 So Gideon and the hundred men that were with him, came to the outside of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch; and they blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers.

20 And the three companies blew their trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands; and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and they blew a trumpet, and fled.

22 And when the three hundred blew the trumpets, the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the army; and the whole army fled as far as Beth-shabtey and Zeddath, and as far as the border of Abel-meholah, which is by Jatbath.

23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.

24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters as far as Beth-barah, which is by the Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together and seized the waters as far as Beth-barah by the Jordan.

25 And they captured two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb at Tyre, and Zeeb they slew at Beth-kabrab; and they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

2 Der HErr3068 aber sprach559 zu Gideon1439: Des Volks5971 ist zu viel7227, das mit dir ist, daß ich sollte Midian4080 in ihre Hände3027 geben5414; Israel3478 möchte sich rühmen6286 wider mich und sagen559: Meine Hand3027 hat3467 mich erlöset.

3 So laß nun4994 ausschreien7121 vor den Ohren241 des Volks5971 und sagen559: Wer blöde3373 und verzagt2730 ist7604, der kehre um7725 und hebe bald sich6852 vom Gebirge2022 Gilead1568. Da kehrete des Volks5971 um7725 zweiundzwanzigtausend8147, daß nur zehntausend6235 überblieben.

4 Und der HErr3068 sprach559 zu Gideon1439: Des Volks5971 ist noch zu viel7227. Führe sie hinab3381 ans Wasser4325, daselbst will ich sie dir prüfen6884; und von welchem ich dir sagen559 werde, daß er mit dir ziehen3212 soll, der soll mit dir ziehen3212; von welchem aber ich sagen559 werde, daß er nicht mit dir ziehen3212 soll, der soll nicht ziehen3212.

5 Und er führete das Volk5971 hinab3381 ans Wasser4325. Und der HErr3068 sprach559 zu Gideon1439: Welcher mit seiner Zunge3956 des Wassers4325 lecket, wie ein Hund3611 lecket, den stelle3322 besonders; desselbengleichen, welcher auf seine Kniee1290 fällt3766 zu trinken8354.

6 Da war die4325 Zahl4557 derer, die geleckt hatten3952 aus der Hand3027 zum Munde6310, dreihundert7969 Mann376; das andere3499 Volk5971 alles hatte knieend1290 getrunken8354.

7 Und3967 der HErr3068 sprach559 zu Gideon1439: Durch die dreihundert7969 Mann376, die geleckt haben3952, will ich euch erlösen3467 und die Midianiter4080 in deine Hände3027 geben5414; aber das andere Volk5971 laß alles gehen3212 an seinen Ort4725.

8 Und3967 sie2388 nahmen3947 Fütterung für das Volk5971 mit sich3027 und ihre Posaunen7782. Aber die andern Israeliten ließ7971 er376 alle gehen, einen jeglichen376 in seine Hütte168; er aber stärkte sich mit dreihundert7969 Mann376. Und das Heer4264 der Midianiter4080 lag unten vor ihm3478 im Grunde6010.

9 Und der HErr3068 sprach559 in derselben Nacht3915 zu ihm: Stehe auf und gehe hinab3381 zum Lager4264; denn ich habe6965 es in deine Hände3027 gegeben5414.

10 Fürchtest3373 du dich3381 aber hinabzugehen3381, so laß deinen Knaben5288 Pura6513 mit dir hinabgehen3381 zum Lager4264,

11 daß du8085 hörest, was sie2388 reden1696. Danach sollst du mit der Macht hinabziehen3381 zum Lager4264. Da310 ging Gideon mit seinem Knaben5288 Pura6513 hinab3381 an3027 den Ort7097 der Schildwächter2571, die im Lager4264 waren.

12 Und1121 die Midianiter4080 und Amalekiter6002 und alle aus dem Morgenlande hatten sich5307 niedergelegt im Grunde6010 wie eine Menge7230 Heuschrecken697; und ihre Kamele1581 waren nicht zu zählen4557 vor6924 der Menge7230, wie der Sand2344 am Ufer8193 des Meers3220.

13 Da nun Gideon1439 kam935, siehe, da er zählete einer einem andern7453 einen Traum2472 und935 sprach559: Siehe, mir2015 hat2492 geträumet, mich deuchte, ein376 geröstet Gerstenbrot6742 wälzte sich3899 zum Heer4264 der Midianiter4080, und da es kam2015 an4605 die Gezelte168, schlug5221 es dieselbigen und warf sie nieder5307 und kehrete sie um, das Oberste zu unterst, daß das Gezelt168 lag5307.

14 Da antwortete6030 der andere7453: Das ist nichts anderes denn das Schwert2719 Gideons1439, des Sohns Joas3101‘, des Israeliten3478. GOtt430 hat559 die1121 Midianiter4080 in seine Hände3027 gegeben5414 mit dem376 ganzen Heer4264.

15 Da Gideon1439 den hörete solchen Traum2472 erzählen und seine Auslegung7667, betete7812 er an und kam wieder7725 ins Heer4264 Israel3478 und sprach559: Machet euch auf6965, denn der HErr3068 hat8085 das Heer4264 der Midianiter4080 in eure Hände3027 gegeben5414.

16 Und3967 er teilete die dreihundert7969 Mann376 in8432 drei7969 Haufen und gab5414 einem jeglichen7218 eine Posaune7782 in seine Hand3027 und ledige Krüge3537 und Fackeln3940 drinnen.

17 Und sprach559 zu6213 ihnen: Sehet auf mich und tut6213 auch also; und siehe, wenn ich an7200 den Ort7097 des Heers komme935: wie ich tue6213, so tut ihr auch.

18 Wenn ich die Posaune7782 blase8628 und alle, die mit mir sind, so sollt ihr auch die Posaunen7782 blasen8628 ums5439 ganze Heer4264 und sprechen559: Hie HErr3068 und Gideon1439!

19 Also kam Gideon1439 und hundert3967 Mann376 mit ihm6965 an den7218 Ort7097 des Heers, an die ersten Wächter8104, die da verordnet waren935, und weckten sie389 auf6965 und bliesen8628 mit Posaunen7782 und zerschlugen5310 die Krüge3537 in ihren Händen3027.

20 Also bliesen8628 alle drei7969 Haufen7218 mit Posaunen7782 und zerbrachen7665 die Krüge3537. Sie2388 hielten aber die Fackeln3940 in ihrer linken8040 Hand3027 und die Posaunen7782 in ihrer rechten Hand3225, daß sie3027 bliesen8628 und riefen7121: Hie Schwert2719 des HErrn3068 und Gideon1439!

21 Und ein376 jeglicher stund auf5975 seinem Ort um das Heer4264 her5439. Da ward7323 das ganze Heer4264 laufend, und schrieen7321 und flohen5127.

22 Und3967 indem die dreihundert7969 Mann376 bliesen8628 die Posaunen7782, schaffte der HErr3068, daß im ganzen Heer4264 eines jeglichen Schwert2719 wider den andern7453 war. Und das Heer4264 floh5127 bis gen Beth-Sitta1029 Zereratha, bis an8193 die Grenze der Breite Mehola65 bei Tabath.

23 Und376 die Männer Israels3478 von Naphthali5321, von Asser836 und310 vom ganzen Manasse4519 schrieen6817 und jagten den Midianitern4080 nach7291.

24 Und376 Gideon1439 sandte Botschaft4397 auf das ganze Gebirge2022 Ephraim669 und ließ7971 sagen559: Kommt herab3381, den Midianitern4080 entgegen7125, und verlaufet ihnen das Wasser4325 bis gen Beth-Bara1012 und den Jordan3383!
