Job

Chapter 2

1 Again there was a day3117 when the sons1121 of God430 came935 to present3320 themselves before5921 the LORD,3068 and Satan7854 came935 also1571 among8432 them to present3320 himself before5921 the LORD.3068

2 And the LORD3068 said559 to Satan,7854 From where335 2088 come935 you? And Satan7854 answered6030 the LORD,3068 and said,559 From going7751 to and fro7751 in the earth,776 and from walking1980 up and down in it.

3 And the LORD3068 said559 to Satan,7854 Have you considered3820 my servant5650 Job,347 that there is none369 like3644 him in the earth,776 a perfect8535 and an upright3477 man,376 one that fears3373 God,430 and eschews5493 evil?7451 and still5750 he holds2388 fast his integrity,8538 although you moved5496 me against him, to destroy1104 him without2600 cause.2600

4 And Satan7854 answered6030 the LORD,3068 and said,559 Skin5785 for skin,5785 yes, all3605 that a man376 has will he give5414 for his life.5315

5 But put7971 forth7971 your hand3027 now,4994 and touch5060 his bone6106 and his flesh,1320 and he will curse1288 you to your face.6440

6 And the LORD3068 said559 to Satan,7854 Behold,2009 he is in your hand;3027 but save8104 his life.5315

7 So went3318 Satan7854 forth3318 from the presence6440 of the LORD,3068 and smote5221 Job347 with sore7451 boils7822 from the sole3709 of his foot7272 to his crown.6936

8 And he took3947 him a potsherd2789 to scrape1623 himself with; and he sat3427 down among8432 the ashes.665

9 Then said559 his wife802 to him, Do you still5750 retain2388 your integrity?8538 curse1288 God,430 and die.4191

10 But he said559 to her, You speak1696 as one259 of the foolish5039 women speaks.1696 What?1571 shall we receive6901 good2896 at the hand854 of God,430 and shall we not receive6901 evil?7451 In all3605 this2063 did not Job347 sin2398 with his lips.8193

11 Now when Job's347 three7969 friends7453 heard8085 of all3605 this2063 evil7451 that was come935 on him, they came935 every376 one376 from his own place;4725 Eliphaz464 the Temanite,8489 and Bildad1085 the Shuhite,7747 and Zophar6691 the Naamathite:5284 for they had made an appointment3259 together3162 to come935 to mourn5110 with him and to comfort5162 him.

12 And when they lifted5375 up their eyes5869 afar7350 off, and knew5234 him not, they lifted5375 up their voice,6963 and wept;1058 and they rent7167 every376 one376 his mantle,4598 and sprinkled2236 dust6083 on their heads7218 toward heaven.8064

13 So they sat3427 down with him on the ground776 seven7651 days3117 and seven7651 nights,3915 and none369 spoke1696 a word1697 to him: for they saw7200 that his grief3511 was very3966 great.1431

Chapter 2

1 AGAIN there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Sa tan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

2 And the LORD said to Satan, Whence have you come? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking on it.

3 And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, an innocent and upright man, one who reveres God, and turns away from evil? He still holds fast to his integrity, although you provoked me against him, to destroy him without cause.

4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man has will he give for his life, to save it.

5 But put forth thy hand now, and touch his flesh or his bone, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6 And the LORD said to Satan, Behold, he is delivered into your hands; only spare his life.

7 So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with cancer from the sole of his foot to his brain.

8 And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with it; and he sat down upon ashes.

9 Then his wife said to him, Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God, and die.

10 But he said to her, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. We have indeed received God's blessings, now shall we not also receive his afflictions? In all these misfortunes Job did not sin, nor did he blaspheme against God with his lips.

11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this misfortune that had come upon him, they set a time of meeting, and came to him every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to console and comfort him.

12 And when they lifted up their eyes from afar, they did not recognize him, and they lifted up their voices, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and threw dust upon their heads toward the heaven.

13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him; for they saw that his affliction was very great.
