Chapter 12

1 Then3767 Jesus2424 six1803 days2250 before4253 the passover3957 came2064 to Bethany,963 where3699 Lazarus2976 was, which3588 had been dead,2348 whom3739 he raised1453 from the dead.3498

2 There1563 they made4160 him a supper;1173 and Martha3136 served:1247 but Lazarus2976 was one1520 of them that sat4873 at4873 the table with him.

3 Then3767 took2983 Mary3137 a pound3046 of ointment3464 of spikenard,3487 4010 very4186 costly,4186 and anointed218 the feet4228 of Jesus,2424 and wiped1591 his feet4228 with her hair:2359 and the house3614 was filled4137 with the odor3744 of the ointment.3464

4 Then3767 said3004 one1520 of his disciples,3101 Judas2455 Iscariot,2469 Simon's4613 son, which3588 should3195 betray3860 him,

5 Why1302 was not this5124 ointment3464 sold4097 for three5145 hundred5145 pence,1220 and given1325 to the poor?4434

6 This5124 he said,2036 not that he cared3199 for the poor;4434 but because3754 he was a thief,2812 and had2192 the bag,1101 and bore941 what3588 was put906 therein.

7 Then3767 said2036 Jesus,2424 Let863 her alone:863 against1519 the day2250 of my burying1780 has she kept5083 this.846

8 For the poor4434 always3842 you have2192 with you; but me you have2192 not always.3842

9 Much4183 people3793 of the Jews2453 therefore3767 knew1097 that he was there:1563 and they came2064 not for Jesus'2424 sake only,3440 but that they might see1492 Lazarus2976 also,2532 whom3739 he had raised1453 from the dead.3498

10 But the chief749 priests749 consulted1011 that they might put615 Lazarus2976 also2532 to death;615

11 Because3754 that by reason1223 of him many4183 of the Jews2453 went5217 away,5217 and believed4100 on1519 Jesus.2424

12 On the next1887 day1887 much4183 people3793 that were come2064 to the feast,1859 when they heard191 that Jesus2424 was coming2064 to Jerusalem,2414

13 Took2983 branches902 of palm5404 trees, and went1831 forth1831 to meet5222 him, and cried,2905 Hosanna:5614 Blessed2127 is the King935 of Israel2474 that comes2064 in the name3686 of the Lord.2962

14 And Jesus,2424 when he had found2147 a young3678 ass,3678 sat2523 thereon;1909 846 as it is written,1125

15 Fear5399 not, daughter2364 of Sion:4622 behold,2400 your King935 comes,2064 sitting2521 on1909 an ass's3688 colt.4454

16 These5023 things understood1097 not his disciples3101 at4412 the first:4412 but when3753 Jesus2424 was glorified,1392 then5119 remembered3415 they that these5023 things were written1125 of him, and that they had done4160 these5023 things to him.

17 The people3793 therefore3767 that was with him when3753 he called5455 Lazarus2976 out of his grave,3419 and raised1453 him from the dead,3498 bore3140 record.3140

18 For this5124 cause1223 the people3793 also2532 met5221 him, for that they heard191 that he had done4160 this5124 miracle.4592

19 The Pharisees5330 therefore3767 said2036 among4314 themselves,1438 Perceive2334 you how3754 you prevail5623 nothing?3762 behold,2396 the world2889 is gone565 after3694 him.

20 And there were certain5100 Greeks1672 among1537 them that came305 up to worship4352 at1722 the feast:1859

21 The same3778 came4334 therefore3767 to Philip,5376 which was of Bethsaida966 of Galilee,1056 and desired2065 him, saying,3004 Sir,2962 we would2309 see1492 Jesus.2424

22 Philip5376 comes2064 and tells3004 Andrew:406 and again3825 Andrew406 and Philip5376 tell3004 Jesus.2424

23 And Jesus2424 answered611 them, saying,3004 The hour5610 is come,2064 that the Son5207 of man444 should be glorified.1392

24 Truly,281 truly,281 I say3004 to you, Except3362 a corn2848 of wheat4621 fall4098 into1519 the ground1093 and die,599 it stays3306 alone:3441 but if1437 it die,599 it brings5342 forth much4183 fruit.2590

25 He that loves5368 his life5590 shall lose622 it; and he that hates3404 his life5590 in this5129 world2889 shall keep5442 it to life2222 eternal.166

26 If1437 any5100 man serve1247 me, let him follow190 me; and where3699 I am,1510 there1563 shall also2532 my servant1249 be: if1437 any5100 man serve1247 me, him will my Father3962 honor.5091

27 Now3568 is my soul5590 troubled;5015 and what5101 shall I say?2036 Father,3962 save4982 me from this5026 hour:5610 but for this5124 cause1223 came2064 I to this5026 hour.5610

28 Father,3962 glorify1392 your name.3686 Then3767 came2064 there a voice5456 from heaven,3772 saying, I have both2532 glorified1392 it, and will glorify1392 it again.3825

29 The people3793 therefore,3767 that stood2476 by, and heard191 it, said3004 that it thundered:1027 1096 others243 said,3004 An angel32 spoke2980 to him.

30 Jesus2424 answered611 and said,2036 This3778 voice5456 came1096 not because1223 of me, but for your5209 sakes.

31 Now3568 is the judgment2920 of this5127 world:2889 now3568 shall the prince758 of this5127 world2889 be cast1544 out.

32 And I, if1437 I be lifted5312 up from the earth,1093 will draw1670 all3956 men to me.

33 This5124 he said,3004 signifying4591 what4169 death2288 he should3195 die.599

34 The people3793 answered611 him, We have heard191 out of the law3551 that Christ5547 stays3306 for ever:165 and how4459 say3004 you, The Son5207 of man444 must1163 be lifted5312 up? who5101 is this3778 Son5207 of man?444

35 Then3767 Jesus2424 said2036 to them, Yet2089 a little3398 while5550 is the light5457 with you. Walk4043 while2193 you have2192 the light,5457 lest2443 3361 darkness4653 come2638 on you: for he that walks4043 in darkness4653 knows1492 not where4226 he goes.5217

36 While2193 you have2192 light,5457 believe4100 in the light,5457 that you may be the children5207 of light.5457 These5023 things spoke2980 Jesus,2424 and departed,565 and did hide2928 himself from them.

37 But though he had done4160 so5118 many5118 miracles4592 before1715 them, yet they believed4100 not on1519 him:

38 That the saying3056 of Esaias2268 the prophet4396 might be fulfilled,4137 which3739 he spoke,2036 Lord,2962 who5101 has believed4100 our report?189 and to whom5101 has the arm1023 of the Lord2962 been revealed?601

39 Therefore1223 5124 they could1410 not believe,4100 because3754 that Esaias2268 said2036 again,3825

40 He has blinded5186 their eyes,3788 and hardened4456 their heart;2588 that they should not see1492 with their eyes,3788 nor2532 understand3539 with their heart,2588 and be converted,1994 and I should heal2390 them.

41 These5023 things said2036 Esaias,2268 when3753 he saw1492 his glory,1391 and spoke2980 of him.

42 Nevertheless3676 3305 among1537 the chief758 rulers758 also2532 many4183 believed4100 on1519 him; but because1223 of the Pharisees5330 they did not confess3670 him, lest2443 3361 they should be put1096 out of the synagogue:656

43 For they loved25 the praise1391 of men444 more3123 than2260 the praise1391 of God.2316

44 Jesus2424 cried2905 and said,2036 He that believes4100 on1519 me, believes4100 not on1519 me, but on1519 him that sent3992 me.

45 And he that sees2334 me sees2334 him that sent3992 me.

46 I am come2064 a light5457 into1519 the world,2889 that whoever3956 3588 believes4100 on1519 me should not abide3306 in darkness.4653

47 And if1437 any5100 man hear191 my words,4487 and believe4100 not, I judge2919 him not: for I came2064 not to judge2919 the world,2889 but to save4982 the world.2889

48 He that rejects114 me, and receives2983 not my words,4487 has2192 one that judges2919 him: the word3056 that I have2192 spoken,2980 the same1565 shall judge2919 him in the last2078 day.2250

49 For I have2192 not spoken2980 of myself;1683 but the Father3962 which3588 sent3992 me, he gave1325 me a commandment,1785 what5101 I should say,2036 and what5101 I should speak.2980

50 And I know1492 that his commandment1785 is life2222 everlasting:166 whatever3739 I speak2980 therefore,3767 even2531 as the Father3962 said2046 to me, so3779 I speak.2980

Chapter 12

1 SIX days before the passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

2 And they gave him a banquet there; Martha served; but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with him.

3 Then Mary took a cruse containing pure and expensive nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 And Judas of Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was about to betray him, said,

5 Why was not this oil sold for three hundred pennies, and given to the poor?

6 He said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and the purse was with him, and he carried whatever was put in it.

7 Jesus then said, Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.

8 For you have the poor always with you, but me you have not always.

9 Many people of the Jews heard that Jesus was there; so they came, not only on account of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 And the high priests were thinking of killing Lazarus also;

11 Because on his account a great many Jews were leaving and believing in Jesus.

12 On the next day, a large crowd which had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13 Took branches of palm trees, and went out to greet him, and they cried out and said, Hosanna, Blessed is the king of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord.

14 And Jesus found an ass and sat on it; as it is written,

15 Fear not, O daughter of Zion; behold, your king cometh to you, riding on the colt of an ass.

16 His disciples did not understand these things at that time; but when Jesus was glorified, then his disciples remembered that these things were written concerning him, and that they had done these things to him.

17 The people who were with him testified that he had called Lazarus from the tomb, and raised him from the dead.

18 It was on this account that large crowds went out to meet him, for they heard that he had performed this miracle.

19 The Pharisees said one to another, Do you see that you have not been able to gain anything? Behold, all the people have gone after him.

20 Now there were some Gentiles * among them who had come up to worship at the feast.

21 They came and approached Philip of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, My lord, we would like to see Jesus.

22 Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 Jesus answered and said to them, The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, that unless a grain of wheat falls and dies in the ground, it will be left alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.

25 He who loves his life will lose it; and he who has no concern for his life in this world will keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also will my servant be; he who serves me, him my Father will honor.

27 Now my soul is disturbed, and what shall I say? O my Father, deliver me from this hour; but for this cause I came to this very hour.

28 O Father, glorify your name. Then a voice was heard from heaven, I am glorified, and I shall again be glorified.

29 And the people who stood by heard it, and said, It was thunder; others said, An angel spoke to him.

30 Jesus answered and said to them, This voice was not on my account, but for your sake.

31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the leader of this world will be cast out.

32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw every man to me.

33 He said this, to show by what kind of death he was to die.

34 The people said to him, We have heard from the law that the Christ shall remain forever; how do you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

35 Jesus said to them, The light is with you for a little while; walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overcome you; and he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.

36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become the sons of the light. Jesus spoke these things, and went away and hid himself from them.

37 Even though he had performed all of these miracles before them, yet they did not believe in him;

38 So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, who said, My Lord, who will believe our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 For this reason, they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,

40 Their eyes have become blind and their heart darkened, so that they cannot see with their eyes and understand with their heart; let them return and I will heal them.

41 Isaiah said these things, when he saw his glory and spoke concerning him.

42 Many of the leading men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.

43 For they loved the honor of men more than the glory of God.

44 Jesus cried out and said, He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.

45 And he who sees me, has already seen him who sent me.

46 I have come into the world as the light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.

47 And he who hears my words, and does not obey them, I will not judge him; for I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He who oppresses me and does not receive my words, there is one who will judge him; the word which I have spoken, it will judge him at the last day.

49 For I did not speak of myself; but the Father who sent me, he commanded me what to say and what to speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting; these things therefore which I speak, just as my Father told me, so I speak.

4 Then3767 said3004 one1520 of his disciples,3101 Judas2455 Iscariot,2469 Simon's4613 son, which3588 should3195 betray3860 him,

4 And Judas of Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was about to betray him, said,

5 Why1302 was not this5124 ointment3464 sold4097 for three5145 hundred5145 pence,1220 and given1325 to the poor?4434

5 Why was not this oil sold for three hundred pennies, and given to the poor?

6 This5124 he said,2036 not that he cared3199 for the poor;4434 but because3754 he was a thief,2812 and had2192 the bag,1101 and bore941 what3588 was put906 therein.

6 He said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and the purse was with him, and he carried whatever was put in it.

7 Then3767 said2036 Jesus,2424 Let863 her alone:863 against1519 the day2250 of my burying1780 has she kept5083 this.846

7 Jesus then said, Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.

8 For the poor4434 always3842 you have2192 with you; but me you have2192 not always.3842

8 For you have the poor always with you, but me you have not always.

11 Because on his account a great many Jews were leaving and believing in Jesus.

13 Took branches of palm trees, and went out to greet him, and they cried out and said, Hosanna, Blessed is the king of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord.

14 And Jesus,2424 when he had found2147 a young3678 ass,3678 sat2523 thereon;1909 846 as it is written,1125

14 And Jesus found an ass and sat on it; as it is written,

15 Fear5399 not, daughter2364 of Sion:4622 behold,2400 your King935 comes,2064 sitting2521 on1909 an ass's3688 colt.4454

15 Fear not, O daughter of Zion; behold, your king cometh to you, riding on the colt of an ass.

16 These5023 things understood1097 not his disciples3101 at4412 the first:4412 but when3753 Jesus2424 was glorified,1392 then5119 remembered3415 they that these5023 things were written1125 of him, and that they had done4160 these5023 things to him.

21 The same3778 came4334 therefore3767 to Philip,5376 which was of Bethsaida966 of Galilee,1056 and desired2065 him, saying,3004 Sir,2962 we would2309 see1492 Jesus.2424

21 They came and approached Philip of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, My lord, we would like to see Jesus.

22 Philip5376 comes2064 and tells3004 Andrew:406 and again3825 Andrew406 and Philip5376 tell3004 Jesus.2424

22 Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 And Jesus2424 answered611 them, saying,3004 The hour5610 is come,2064 that the Son5207 of man444 should be glorified.1392

23 Jesus answered and said to them, The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Truly,281 truly,281 I say3004 to you, Except3362 a corn2848 of wheat4621 fall4098 into1519 the ground1093 and die,599 it stays3306 alone:3441 but if1437 it die,599 it brings5342 forth much4183 fruit.2590

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, that unless a grain of wheat falls and dies in the ground, it will be left alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.

25 He that loves5368 his life5590 shall lose622 it; and he that hates3404 his life5590 in this5129 world2889 shall keep5442 it to life2222 eternal.166

25 He who loves his life will lose it; and he who has no concern for his life in this world will keep it unto life eternal.

26 If1437 any5100 man serve1247 me, let him follow190 me; and where3699 I am,1510 there1563 shall also2532 my servant1249 be: if1437 any5100 man serve1247 me, him will my Father3962 honor.5091

28 O Father, glorify your name. Then a voice was heard from heaven, I am glorified, and I shall again be glorified.

29 The people3793 therefore,3767 that stood2476 by, and heard191 it, said3004 that it thundered:1027 1096 others243 said,3004 An angel32 spoke2980 to him.

29 And the people who stood by heard it, and said, It was thunder; others said, An angel spoke to him.

30 Jesus2424 answered611 and said,2036 This3778 voice5456 came1096 not because1223 of me, but for your5209 sakes.

30 Jesus answered and said to them, This voice was not on my account, but for your sake.

31 Now3568 is the judgment2920 of this5127 world:2889 now3568 shall the prince758 of this5127 world2889 be cast1544 out.

31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the leader of this world will be cast out.

32 And I, if1437 I be lifted5312 up from the earth,1093 will draw1670 all3956 men to me.

32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw every man to me.

33 This5124 he said,3004 signifying4591 what4169 death2288 he should3195 die.599

33 He said this, to show by what kind of death he was to die.

34 The people3793 answered611 him, We have heard191 out of the law3551 that Christ5547 stays3306 for ever:165 and how4459 say3004 you, The Son5207 of man444 must1163 be lifted5312 up? who5101 is this3778 Son5207 of man?444

34 The people said to him, We have heard from the law that the Christ shall remain forever; how do you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

35 Then3767 Jesus2424 said2036 to them, Yet2089 a little3398 while5550 is the light5457 with you. Walk4043 while2193 you have2192 the light,5457 lest2443 3361 darkness4653 come2638 on you: for he that walks4043 in darkness4653 knows1492 not where4226 he goes.5217

35 Jesus said to them, The light is with you for a little while; walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overcome you; and he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.

36 While2193 you have2192 light,5457 believe4100 in the light,5457 that you may be the children5207 of light.5457 These5023 things spoke2980 Jesus,2424 and departed,565 and did hide2928 himself from them.

36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become the sons of the light. Jesus spoke these things, and went away and hid himself from them.

37 But though he had done4160 so5118 many5118 miracles4592 before1715 them, yet they believed4100 not on1519 him:

37 Even though he had performed all of these miracles before them, yet they did not believe in him;

38 That the saying3056 of Esaias2268 the prophet4396 might be fulfilled,4137 which3739 he spoke,2036 Lord,2962 who5101 has believed4100 our report?189 and to whom5101 has the arm1023 of the Lord2962 been revealed?601

38 So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, who said, My Lord, who will believe our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 Therefore1223 5124 they could1410 not believe,4100 because3754 that Esaias2268 said2036 again,3825

39 For this reason, they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,

40 He has blinded5186 their eyes,3788 and hardened4456 their heart;2588 that they should not see1492 with their eyes,3788 nor2532 understand3539 with their heart,2588 and be converted,1994 and I should heal2390 them.

40 Their eyes have become blind and their heart darkened, so that they cannot see with their eyes and understand with their heart; let them return and I will heal them.

41 These5023 things said2036 Esaias,2268 when3753 he saw1492 his glory,1391 and spoke2980 of him.

41 Isaiah said these things, when he saw his glory and spoke concerning him.

42 Nevertheless3676 3305 among1537 the chief758 rulers758 also2532 many4183 believed4100 on1519 him; but because1223 of the Pharisees5330 they did not confess3670 him, lest2443 3361 they should be put1096 out of the synagogue:656

42 Many of the leading men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.

43 For they loved25 the praise1391 of men444 more3123 than2260 the praise1391 of God.2316

43 For they loved the honor of men more than the glory of God.

44 Jesus2424 cried2905 and said,2036 He that believes4100 on1519 me, believes4100 not on1519 me, but on1519 him that sent3992 me.

44 Jesus cried out and said, He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.

45 And he that sees2334 me sees2334 him that sent3992 me.

45 And he who sees me, has already seen him who sent me.

46 I am come2064 a light5457 into1519 the world,2889 that whoever3956 3588 believes4100 on1519 me should not abide3306 in darkness.4653

46 I have come into the world as the light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.

47 And if1437 any5100 man hear191 my words,4487 and believe4100 not, I judge2919 him not: for I came2064 not to judge2919 the world,2889 but to save4982 the world.2889

47 And he who hears my words, and does not obey them, I will not judge him; for I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejects114 me, and receives2983 not my words,4487 has2192 one that judges2919 him: the word3056 that I have2192 spoken,2980 the same1565 shall judge2919 him in the last2078 day.2250

48 He who oppresses me and does not receive my words, there is one who will judge him; the word which I have spoken, it will judge him at the last day.

49 For I have2192 not spoken2980 of myself;1683 but the Father3962 which3588 sent3992 me, he gave1325 me a commandment,1785 what5101 I should say,2036 and what5101 I should speak.2980

49 For I did not speak of myself; but the Father who sent me, he commanded me what to say and what to speak.

50 And I know1492 that his commandment1785 is life2222 everlasting:166 whatever3739 I speak2980 therefore,3767 even2531 as the Father3962 said2046 to me, so3779 I speak.2980

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting; these things therefore which I speak, just as my Father told me, so I speak.
