Judges

Chapter 6

1 And the children1121 of Israel3478 did6213 evil7451 in the sight5869 of the LORD:3068 and the LORD3068 delivered5414 them into the hand3027 of Midian4080 seven7651 years.8141

2 And the hand3027 of Midian4080 prevailed5810 against5921 Israel:3478 and because6440 of the Midianites4080 the children1121 of Israel3478 made6213 them the dens4492 which834 are in the mountains,2022 and caves,4631 and strong4679 holds.4679

3 And so it was, when518 Israel3478 had sown,2232 that the Midianites4080 came5927 up, and the Amalekites,6003 and the children1121 of the east,6924 even they came5927 up against5921 them;

4 And they encamped2583 against5921 them, and destroyed7843 the increase2981 of the earth,776 till5704 you come935 to Gaza,5804 and left7604 no3808 sustenance4241 for Israel,3478 neither sheep,7716 nor ox,7794 nor ass.2543

5 For they came5927 up with their cattle4735 and their tents,168 and they came935 as grasshoppers697 for multitude;7230 for both they and their camels1581 were without369 number:4557 and they entered935 into the land776 to destroy7843 it.

6 And Israel3478 was greatly3966 impoverished1809 because6440 of the Midianites;4080 and the children1121 of Israel3478 cried2199 to the LORD.3068

7 And it came1961 to pass, when3588 the children1121 of Israel3478 cried2199 to the LORD3068 because5921 182 of the Midianites,4080

8 That the LORD3068 sent7971 a prophet5030 to the children1121 of Israel,3478 which said559 to them, Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel,3478 I brought5927 you up from Egypt,4714 and brought3318 you forth3318 out of the house1004 of bondage;5650

9 And I delivered5337 you out of the hand3027 of the Egyptians,4714 and out of the hand3027 of all3605 that oppressed3905 you, and drove1644 them out from before6440 you, and gave5414 you their land;776

10 And I said559 to you, I am the LORD3068 your God;430 fear3372 not the gods430 of the Amorites,567 in whose834 land776 you dwell:3427 but you have not obeyed8085 my voice.6963

11 And there came935 an angel4397 of the LORD,3068 and sat3427 under8478 an oak424 which834 was in Ophrah,6084 that pertained to Joash3101 the Abiezrite:33 and his son1121 Gideon1439 threshed2251 wheat2406 by the wine press,1660 to hide5127 it from the Midianites.4080

12 And the angel4397 of the LORD3068 appeared7200 to him, and said559 to him, The LORD3068 is with you, you mighty1368 man of valor.2428

13 And Gideon1439 said559 to him, Oh994 my Lord,113 if the LORD3068 be with us, why4100 then is all3605 this2063 befallen4672 us? and where346 be all3605 his miracles6381 which834 our fathers1 told5608 us of, saying,559 Did not the LORD3068 bring5927 us up from Egypt?4714 but now6258 the LORD3068 has forsaken5203 us, and delivered5414 us into the hands3709 of the Midianites.4080

14 And the LORD3068 looked6437 on him, and said,559 Go3212 in this2088 your might,3581 and you shall save3467 Israel3478 from the hand3709 of the Midianites:4080 have not I sent7971 you?

15 And he said559 to him, Oh994 my Lord,136 with which4100 shall I save3467 Israel?3478 behold,2009 my family504 is poor1800 in Manasseh,4519 and I am the least6810 in my father's1 house.1004

16 And the LORD3068 said559 to him, Surely3588 I will be with you, and you shall smite5221 the Midianites4080 as one259 man.376

17 And he said559 to him, If518 now4994 I have found4672 grace2580 in your sight,5869 then show6213 me a sign226 that you talk1696 with me.

18 Depart4185 not hence,2088 I pray4994 you, until5704 I come935 to you, and bring3318 forth3318 my present,4503 and set3240 it before6440 you. And he said,559 I will tarry3427 until5704 you come7725 again.7725

19 And Gideon1439 went935 in, and made6213 ready a kid,1423 5795 and unleavened4682 cakes4682 of an ephah374 of flour:7058 the flesh1320 he put7760 in a basket,5536 and he put7760 the broth4839 in a pot,6517 and brought3318 it out to him under8478 the oak,424 and presented5066 it.

20 And the angel4397 of God430 said559 to him, Take3947 the flesh1320 and the unleavened4682 cakes,4682 and lay3240 them on this1975 rock,5553 and pour8210 out the broth.4839 And he did6213 so.3651

21 Then the angel4397 of the LORD3068 put7971 forth7971 the end7097 of the staff4938 that was in his hand,3027 and touched5060 the flesh1320 and the unleavened4682 cakes;4682 and there rose5927 up fire784 out of the rock,6697 and consumed398 the flesh1320 and the unleavened4682 cakes.4682 Then the angel4397 of the LORD3068 departed1980 out of his sight.5869

22 And when Gideon1439 perceived7200 that he was an angel4397 of the LORD,136 Gideon1439 said,559 Alas,162 O LORD3068 God!3069 for because5921 3651 I have seen7200 an angel4397 of the LORD3068 face6440 to face.6440

23 And the LORD3068 said559 to him, Peace7965 be to you; fear3372 not: you shall not die.4191

24 Then Gideon1439 built1129 an altar4196 there8033 to the LORD,3068 and called7121 it Jehovahshalom:3073 to this2088 day3117 it is yet5750 in Ophrah6084 of the Abiezrites.33

25 And it came1961 to pass the same1931 night,3915 that the LORD3068 said559 to him, Take3947 your father's1 young6499 bullock,6499 even the second8145 bullock6499 of seven7651 years8141 old, and throw2040 down2040 the altar4196 of Baal1168 that your father1 has, and cut3772 down the grove842 that is by it:

26 And build1129 an altar4196 to the LORD3068 your God430 on the top7218 of this2088 rock,4581 in the ordered4634 place,4634 and take3947 the second8145 bullock,6499 and offer5927 a burnt5930 sacrifice with the wood6086 of the grove842 which834 you shall cut3772 down.

27 Then Gideon1439 took3947 ten6235 men582 of his servants,5650 and did6213 as the LORD3068 had said1696 to him: and so it was, because834 he feared3372 his father's1 household,1004 and the men582 of the city,5892 that he could not do6213 it by day,3119 that he did6213 it by night.3915

28 And when the men582 of the city5892 arose7925 early7925 in the morning,1242 behold,2009 the altar4196 of Baal1168 was cast5422 down,5422 and the grove842 was cut3772 down that was by it, and the second8145 bullock6499 was offered5927 on the altar4196 that was built.1129

29 And they said559 one376 to another,7453 Who4310 has done6213 this2088 thing?1697 And when they inquired1875 and asked,1245 they said,559 Gideon1439 the son1121 of Joash3101 has done6213 this2088 thing.1697

30 Then the men582 of the city5892 said559 to Joash,3101 Bring3318 out your son,1121 that he may die:4191 because3588 he has cast5422 down the altar4196 of Baal,1168 and because3588 he has cut3772 down the grove842 that was by it.

31 And Joash3101 said559 to all3605 that stood5975 against5921 him, Will you plead7378 for Baal?1168 will you save3467 him? he that will plead7378 for him, let him be put to death4191 whilst5704 it is yet morning:1242 if518 he be a god,430 let him plead7378 for himself, because3588 one has cast5422 down5422 his altar.4196

32 Therefore on that day3117 he called7121 him Jerubbaal,3378 saying,559 Let Baal1168 plead7378 against him, because3588 he has thrown5422 down5422 his altar.4196

33 Then all3605 the Midianites4080 and the Amalekites6003 and the children1121 of the east6924 were gathered622 together,3162 and went5674 over,5674 and pitched2583 in the valley6010 of Jezreel.3157

34 But the Spirit7307 of the LORD3068 came3847 on Gideon,1439 and he blew8628 a trumpet;7782 and Abiezer44 was gathered2199 after310 him.

35 And he sent7971 messengers4397 throughout all3605 Manasseh;4519 who also1571 was gathered2199 after310 him: and he sent7971 messengers4397 to Asher,836 and to Zebulun,2074 and to Naphtali;5321 and they came5927 up to meet7125 them.

36 And Gideon1439 said559 to God,430 If518 you will save3467 Israel3478 by my hand,3027 as you have said,1696

37 Behold,2009 I will put3322 a fleece1492 of wool6785 in the floor;1637 and if518 the dew2919 be on5921 the fleece1492 only,905 and it be dry2721 on all3605 the earth776 beside, then shall I know3045 that you will save3467 Israel3478 by my hand,3027 as you have said.1696

38 And it was so:3651 for he rose7925 up early7925 on the morrow,4283 and thrust2115 the fleece1492 together, and wringed4680 the dew2919 out of the fleece,1492 a bowl5602 full4392 of water.4325

39 And Gideon1439 said559 to God,430 Let not your anger639 be hot2734 against me, and I will speak1696 but this once:6471 let me prove,5254 I pray4994 you, but this once6471 with the fleece;1492 let it now4994 be dry2721 only905 on the fleece,1492 and on all3605 the ground776 let there be dew.2919

40 And God430 did6213 so3651 that night:3915 for it was dry2721 on the fleece1492 only,905 and there was dew2919 on5921 all3605 the ground.776

Chapter 6

1 AND the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Midianites seven years.

2 And the hand of the Midianites prevailed against Israel, in that they fled from before the Midianites; and the children of Israel made for themselves dens in the mountains, and caves, and sheepfolds.

3 And whenever Israel had sown, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the Rakimites came up and encamped against them;

4 And they destroyed the produce of the whole land as far as the entrance of Gaza, and left no food for Israel to raise either oxen or sheep or asses.

5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came like locusts in multitude; for both they and their camels were without number; and they entered into the land to destroy it.

6 And Israel trembled exceedingly from before the Midianites;

7 And the children of Israel cried to the LORD because of the Midianites,

8 And the LORD sent a prophet to the children of Israel, and he said to them, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9 And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all your oppressors, and destroyed them from before you and gave you their land;

10 And I said to you, I am the LORD your God; you shall not worship the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but you have not obeyed my voice.

11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was at Ophrah, the town of Joash the father of Azri; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 And the angel of the LORD appeared and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor.

13 And Gideon said to him, I beseech you, O my lord, if the LORD be with us, why then have all these misfortunes befallen us? And where are all his wonders of which our fathers have told us, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of the Midianites.

14 And the LORD turned to him, and said, Go with this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites; behold, I have sent you.

15 And he said to him, I beseech thee, O my LORD, with what shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father's family.

16 And the LORD said to him, I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man.

17 And he said to him, If now I have found mercy in thy sight, then show me a sign that I may know that thou speakest with me.

18 Do not depart from here until I come to thee and bring out my meal and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until you come again.

19 So Gideon went in and prepared a kid and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak and presented it.

20 And the angel of the LORD said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on the rock, and pour out the broth over it. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the LORD .put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.

22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.

23 And the LORD said to him, Peace be unto you; fear not; you shall not die.

24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it Mariah-shalama; and to this day it still stands in Ophrah, the town of the father of Azri.

25 And it came to pass on that day, the LORD said to him, Take your father's bullock, and the second bullock seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal, the idol of your father, and cut down the grove that is by it;

26 And build an altar to the LORD your God upon the top of this rock, in an orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer it upon it as a burnt offering with the wood of the grove which you shall cut down.

27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said to him; and because he was afraid of doing it by day, because of his father's household and the men of the town, he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the town arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was pulled down and the grove which was beside it was destroyed and the second bullock was offered upon another altar which had been built.

29 And they said one to another, Who has done this thing? And when they had asked and enquired, they said, Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.

30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die; because he has pulled down the altar of Baal and has cut down the grove that was by it.

31 And Joash said to all who stood against him, Will you plead for Baal? Or will you try to save him? Whosoever pleads for him shall be put to death while it is yet morning; if he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been thrown down.

32 Therefore on that day he called Gideon Nedo-baal, saying, Let Baal judge him, because he has thrown down his altar.

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the Rakimites were gathered together, and went over and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Jezreel shouted his approval.

35 And he sent his messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also blew trumpets and followed him; and he sent his messengers to Asher and to Zebulun and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 And Gideon said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,

37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; and if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.

38 And it was so; and he rose early the next day and pressed the fleece and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

39 And Gideon said to God, Let not thy anger kindle against me, and I will speak but this once; let me prove thee again but this once with the fleece; let now only the fleece be dry, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40 And God did so that night; for only the fleece was dry, and there was dew on all the ground.

15 And he said559 to him, Oh994 my Lord,136 with which4100 shall I save3467 Israel?3478 behold,2009 my family504 is poor1800 in Manasseh,4519 and I am the least6810 in my father's1 house.1004

19 So Gideon went in and prepared a kid and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak and presented it.

20 And the angel4397 of God430 said559 to him, Take3947 the flesh1320 and the unleavened4682 cakes,4682 and lay3240 them on this1975 rock,5553 and pour8210 out the broth.4839 And he did6213 so.3651

20 And the angel of the LORD said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on the rock, and pour out the broth over it. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the LORD .put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.

22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.

23 And the LORD3068 said559 to him, Peace7965 be to you; fear3372 not: you shall not die.4191

23 And the LORD said to him, Peace be unto you; fear not; you shall not die.

24 Then Gideon1439 built1129 an altar4196 there8033 to the LORD,3068 and called7121 it Jehovahshalom:3073 to this2088 day3117 it is yet5750 in Ophrah6084 of the Abiezrites.33

24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it Mariah-shalama; and to this day it still stands in Ophrah, the town of the father of Azri.

25 And it came to pass on that day, the LORD said to him, Take your father's bullock, and the second bullock seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal, the idol of your father, and cut down the grove that is by it;

26 And build an altar to the LORD your God upon the top of this rock, in an orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer it upon it as a burnt offering with the wood of the grove which you shall cut down.

27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said to him; and because he was afraid of doing it by day, because of his father's household and the men of the town, he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the town arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was pulled down and the grove which was beside it was destroyed and the second bullock was offered upon another altar which had been built.

29 And they said559 one376 to another,7453 Who4310 has done6213 this2088 thing?1697 And when they inquired1875 and asked,1245 they said,559 Gideon1439 the son1121 of Joash3101 has done6213 this2088 thing.1697

29 And they said one to another, Who has done this thing? And when they had asked and enquired, they said, Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.

30 Then the men582 of the city5892 said559 to Joash,3101 Bring3318 out your son,1121 that he may die:4191 because3588 he has cast5422 down the altar4196 of Baal,1168 and because3588 he has cut3772 down the grove842 that was by it.

30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die; because he has pulled down the altar of Baal and has cut down the grove that was by it.

31 And Joash said to all who stood against him, Will you plead for Baal? Or will you try to save him? Whosoever pleads for him shall be put to death while it is yet morning; if he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been thrown down.

32 Therefore on that day3117 he called7121 him Jerubbaal,3378 saying,559 Let Baal1168 plead7378 against him, because3588 he has thrown5422 down5422 his altar.4196

32 Therefore on that day he called Gideon Nedo-baal, saying, Let Baal judge him, because he has thrown down his altar.

33 Then all3605 the Midianites4080 and the Amalekites6003 and the children1121 of the east6924 were gathered622 together,3162 and went5674 over,5674 and pitched2583 in the valley6010 of Jezreel.3157

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the Rakimites were gathered together, and went over and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

34 But the Spirit7307 of the LORD3068 came3847 on Gideon,1439 and he blew8628 a trumpet;7782 and Abiezer44 was gathered2199 after310 him.

34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Jezreel shouted his approval.

35 And he sent his messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also blew trumpets and followed him; and he sent his messengers to Asher and to Zebulun and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 And Gideon1439 said559 to God,430 If518 you will save3467 Israel3478 by my hand,3027 as you have said,1696

36 And Gideon said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,

37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; and if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.

38 And it was so:3651 for he rose7925 up early7925 on the morrow,4283 and thrust2115 the fleece1492 together, and wringed4680 the dew2919 out of the fleece,1492 a bowl5602 full4392 of water.4325

38 And it was so; and he rose early the next day and pressed the fleece and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

39 And Gideon said to God, Let not thy anger kindle against me, and I will speak but this once; let me prove thee again but this once with the fleece; let now only the fleece be dry, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40 And God430 did6213 so3651 that night:3915 for it was dry2721 on the fleece1492 only,905 and there was dew2919 on5921 all3605 the ground.776

40 And God did so that night; for only the fleece was dry, and there was dew on all the ground.
