Chapter 16

1 The Pharisees5330 also2532 with the Sadducees4523 came,4334 and tempting3985 desired1905 him that he would show1925 them a sign4592 from heaven.3772

2 He answered611 and said2036 to them, When it is evening,3798 you say,3004 It will be fair2105 weather:2105 for the sky3772 is red.4449

3 And in the morning,4404 It will be foul5494 weather5494 to day:4594 for the sky3772 is red4449 and lowering.4768 O you hypocrites,5273 you can1097 discern1252 the face4383 of the sky;3772 but can1410 you not discern the signs4592 of the times?2540

4 A wicked4190 and adulterous3428 generation1074 seeks1934 after1934 a sign;4592 and there shall no3756 sign4592 be given1325 to it, but the sign4592 of the prophet4396 Jonas.2495 And he left2641 them, and departed.565

5 And when his disciples3101 were come2064 to the other4008 side,4008 they had forgotten1950 to take2983 bread.740

6 Then1161 Jesus2424 said2036 to them, Take heed3708 and beware4337 of the leaven2219 of the Pharisees5330 and of the Sadducees.4523

7 And they reasoned1260 among1722 themselves,1438 saying,3004 It is because3754 we have taken2983 no3756 bread.740

8 Which when Jesus2424 perceived,1097 he said2036 to them, O you of little3640 faith,3640 why5101 reason1260 you among1722 yourselves,1438 because3754 you have brought2192 no3756 bread?740

9 Do you not yet3768 understand,3539 neither3761 remember3421 the five4002 loaves740 of the five4000 thousand,4000 and how4214 many4214 baskets2894 you took2983 up?

10 Neither3761 the seven2033 loaves740 of the four5070 thousand,5070 and how4214 many4214 baskets4711 you took2983 up?

11 How4459 is it that you do not understand3539 that I spoke2036 it not to you concerning4012 bread,740 that you should beware4337 of the leaven2219 of the Pharisees5330 and of the Sadducees?4523

12 Then5119 understood4920 they how that he bade2036 them not beware4337 of the leaven2219 of bread,740 but of the doctrine1322 of the Pharisees5330 and of the Sadducees.4523

13 When Jesus2424 came2064 into1519 the coasts3313 of Caesarea2542 Philippi,5375 he asked2065 his disciples,3101 saying,3004 Whom5101 do men444 say3004 that I the Son5207 of man444 am?1511

14 And they said,2036 Some3588 3033 say that you are John2491 the Baptist:910 some,3588 3033 Elias;2243 and others,2087 Jeremias,2408 or2228 one1520 of the prophets.4396

15 He said3004 to them, But whom5101 say3004 you that I am?1511

16 And Simon4613 Peter4074 answered611 and said,2036 You are1488 the Christ,5547 the Son5207 of the living2198 God.2316

17 And Jesus2424 answered611 and said2036 to him, Blessed3107 are1488 you, Simon4613 Barjona:920 for flesh4561 and blood129 has not revealed601 it to you, but my Father3962 which3588 is in heaven.3772

18 And I say3004 also1161 to you, That you are1488 Peter,4074 and on this5026 rock4073 I will build3618 my church;1577 and the gates4439 of hell86 shall not prevail2729 against2729 it.

19 And I will give1325 to you the keys2807 of the kingdom932 of heaven:3772 and whatever3739 1487 you shall bind1210 on1909 earth1093 shall be bound1210 in heaven:3772 and whatever1487 you shall loose3089 on1909 earth1093 shall be loosed3089 in heaven.3772

20 Then5119 charged1291 he his disciples3101 that they should tell2036 no3762 man3367 that he was Jesus2424 the Christ.5547

21 From that time5119 forth began756 Jesus2424 to show1166 to his disciples,3101 how that he must1163 go565 to Jerusalem,2414 and suffer3958 many4183 things of the elders4245 and chief749 priests749 and scribes,1122 and be killed,615 and be raised1453 again1453 the third5154 day.2250

22 Then2532 Peter4074 took4355 him, and began756 to rebuke2008 him, saying,3004 Be it far2436 from you, Lord:2962 this5124 shall not be to you.

23 But he turned,4762 and said2036 to Peter,4074 Get5217 you behind3694 me, Satan:4567 you are1488 an offense4625 to me: for you mind5426 not the things that be of God,2316 but those3588 that be of men.444

24 Then5119 said2036 Jesus2424 to his disciples,3101 If1487 any1536 man will2309 come2064 after3694 me, let him deny533 himself,1438 and take142 up his cross,4716 and follow190 me.

25 For whoever3739 302 will2309 save4982 his life5590 shall lose622 it: and whoever3739 302 will lose622 his life5590 for my sake1752 shall find2147 it.

26 For what5101 is a man444 profited,5623 if1437 he shall gain2770 the whole3650 world,2889 and lose2210 his own soul?5590 or2228 what5101 shall a man444 give1325 in exchange465 for his soul?5590

27 For the Son5207 of man444 shall come2064 in the glory1391 of his Father3962 with his angels;32 and then5119 he shall reward591 every1538 man according2596 to his works.4234

28 Truly281 I say3004 to you, There be some5100 standing2476 here,5602 which3748 shall not taste1089 of death,2288 till2193 they see1492 the Son5207 of man444 coming2064 in his kingdom.932

Chapter 16

1 AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to him to tempt him; and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 But he answered and said to them, When it is evening, you say, It is clear, for the sky is red.

3 And in the morning you say, It is a winter day, for the sky is red and cloudy. O hypocrites, you know how to judge the face of the sky, but the signs of the present time you are not able to distinguish.

4 A wicked and adulterous generation wants a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them and went away.

5 When his disciples came to the crossing place, they had forgotten to take bread with them.

6 He said to them, Look out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

7 And they were reasoning among themselves and saying, It is because we have not brought bread.

8 But Jesus knew it and said to them, What are you thinking among yourselves, O you of little faith; is it because you have not brought bread?

9 Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves of bread of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

10 Neither the seven loaves of bread of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

11 How is it that you did not understand that I was not talking to you about the bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

12 Then they understood, that he did not say that they should beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

13 When Jesus came to the country of Caesarea of Philippi, he asked his disciples saying, What do the men say concerning me, that I am merely a son of man?

14 They said, There are some who say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets:

15 He said to them, Who do you say that I am?

16 Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in heaven.

18 I tell you also that you are a stone, and upon this stone I will build my church; and the doors of Sheol shall not shut in on it.

19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth shall be released in heaven.

20 Then he charged his disciples not to tell any man that he is the Christ.

21 From that time Jesus began to make known to his disciples, that he will shortly have to go to Jerusalem, and suffer a great deal from the elders, and the high priests and scribes, and be killed, and rise up on the third day.

22 So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, and he said, Far be it from you, my Lord, that this should happen to you.

23 But he turned, and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan, you are a stumbling-block to me; for you are not thinking of the things of God, but of men.

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, He who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.

25 For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it.

26 For how will a man be benefited, if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

27 For the Son of man will come in the glory of his Father with his holy angels; and then he will reward each man according to his works.

28 Truly I say to you, There are men who stand here, who will not taste death, until they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
