Chapter 7

1 Know50 you not, brothers,80 (for I speak2980 to them that know1097 the law,3551) how that the law3551 has dominion2961 over a man444 as long5550 as he lives?2198

2 For the woman1135 which has5220 an husband5220 is bound1210 by the law3551 to her husband435 so long as he lives;2198 but if1437 the husband435 be dead,599 she is loosed2673 from the law3551 of her husband.435

3 So686 then686 if,1437 while her husband435 lives,2198 she be married1096 to another2087 man,435 she shall be called5537 an adulteress:3428 but if1437 her husband435 be dead,599 she is free1658 from that law;3551 so that she is no3361 adulteress,3428 though she be married1096 to another2087 man.435

4 Why,5620 my brothers,80 you also2532 are become2289 dead2289 to the law3551 by the body4983 of Christ;5547 that you should be married1096 to another,2087 even to him who is raised1453 from the dead,3498 that we should bring2592 forth fruit2592 to God.2316

5 For when3753 we were in the flesh,4561 the motions3804 of sins,266 which3588 were by the law,3551 did work1754 in our members3196 to bring2592 forth fruit2592 to death.2288

6 But now3570 we are delivered2673 from the law,3551 that being dead599 wherein1722 3757 we were held;2722 that we should serve1398 in newness2538 of spirit,4151 and not in the oldness3821 of the letter.1121

7 What5101 shall we say2046 then?3767 Is the law3551 sin?266 God3361 1096 forbid.3361 1096 No,235 I had not known1097 sin,266 but by the law:3551 for I had not known1492 lust,1939 except1508 the law3551 had said,3004 You shall not covet.1937

8 But sin,266 taking2983 occasion874 by the commandment,1785 worked2716 in me all3956 manner of concupiscence.1939 For without5565 the law3551 sin266 was dead.3498

9 For I was alive2198 without5565 the law3551 once:4218 but when the commandment1785 came,2064 sin266 revived,326 and I died.599

10 And the commandment,1785 which3588 was ordained to life,2222 I found2147 to be to death.2288

11 For sin,266 taking2983 occasion874 by the commandment,1785 deceived1818 me, and by it slew615 me.

12 Why5620 the law3551 is holy,40 and the commandment1785 holy,40 and just,1342 and good.18

13 Was then3767 that which is good18 made1096 death2288 to me? God3361 1096 forbid.3361 1096 But sin,266 that it might appear5316 sin,266 working2716 death2288 in me by that which is good;18 that sin266 by the commandment1785 might become1096 exceeding2596 5236 sinful.268

14 For we know1492 that the law3551 is spiritual:4152 but I am1510 carnal,4559 sold4097 under5259 sin.266

15 For that which3739 I do2716 I allow1097 not: for what3739 I would,2309 that do4238 I not; but what3739 I hate,3404 that do4160 I.

16 If1487 then1161 I do4160 that which3739 I would2309 not, I consent4852 to the law3551 that it is good.2570

17 Now3570 then1161 it is no3765 more2089 I that do2716 it, but sin266 that dwells3611 in me.

18 For I know1492 that in me (that is, in my flesh,4561) dwells3611 no3756 good18 thing: for to will2309 is present3873 with me; but how to perform2716 that which is good2570 I find2147 not.

19 For the good18 that I would2309 I do4160 not: but the evil2556 which3739 I would2309 not, that I do.4238

20 Now1161 if1487 I do4160 that I would2309 not, it is no3765 more2089 I that do2716 it, but sin266 that dwells3611 in me.

21 I find2147 then686 a law,3551 that, when I would2309 do4160 good,2570 evil2556 is present3873 with me.

22 For I delight4913 in the law3551 of God2316 after2596 the inward2080 man:444

23 But I see991 another2087 law3551 in my members,3196 warring497 against497 the law3551 of my mind,3563 and bringing163 me into captivity163 to the law3551 of sin266 which3588 is in my members.3196

24 O wretched5005 man444 that I am! who5101 shall deliver4506 me from the body4983 of this5127 death?2288

25 I thank2168 God2316 through1223 Jesus2424 Christ5547 our Lord.2962 So686 then686 with the mind3563 I myself serve1398 the law3551 of God;2316 but with the flesh4561 the law3551 of sin.266

Chapter 7

1 DO you not know, my brethren, I speak to them who know the law, that the law has authority over a person as long as he lives?

2 Just as a woman is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband should die, she is freed from the law of her husband.

3 Thus if, while her husband is alive, she should be attached to another man, she becomes an adulteress: but if her husband is dead, she is free from the law; so that she is not an adulteress though she becomes another man's wife.

4 Wherefore, my brethren, you also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that you might become another's, even to him who arose from the dead, so that you may bring forth fruit to God.

5 For when we were in the flesh, the wounds of sin, which were by the law, worked in our members to bring forth fruits to death.

6 But now we are freed from the law, being dead to that which had hold upon us; and we should henceforth serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Far be it. I would not have known the meaning of sin, except by means of the law: for I would never have known the meaning of lust, except the law said, Thou shalt not covet.

8 So by means of this commandment, sin found an occasion and provoked in me every kind of lust. For without the law sin was dead.

9 Formerly I lived without the law: but when the commandment came, sin came to life and I died.

10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be for death.

11 For sin, finding occasion by the commandment, misled me and by it killed me.

12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

13 Has then that which is good, become death to me? Far be it. But sin that is exposed as sin and works death in me for that which is good, will be the more condemned by means of the law.

14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am of the flesh enslaved to sin.

15 For I do not know what I do: and I do not do the thing which I want, but I do the thing which I hate. That is exactly what I do.

16 So then if I do that which I do not wish to do, I can testify concerning the law that it is good.

17 Now then it is not I who do it, but sin which dominates me.

18 Yet I know that it does not fully dominate me, (that is in my flesh) but as far as good is concerned, the choice is easy for me to make, but to do it, that is difficult.

19 For it is not the good that I wish to do, that I do: but it is the evil that I do not wish to do, that I do.

20 Now if I do that which I do not wish, then it is not I who do it, but the sin which dominates me.

21 I find therefore, that the law agrees with my conscience when I wish to do good, but evil is always near, distracting me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and it makes me a captive to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this mortal body?

25 I thank God through our LORD Jesus Christ. Now therefore with my mind I am a servant of the law of God; but with my flesh I am a servant of the law of sin.

16 If1487 then1161 I do4160 that which3739 I would2309 not, I consent4852 to the law3551 that it is good.2570
