Chapter 20

1 When3588 thou goest out3318 to battle4421 against5921 thine enemies,341 and seest7200 horses,5483 and chariots,7393 and a people5971 more7227 than4480 thou, be not afraid3372 3808 of4480 them: for3588 the LORD3068 thy God430 is with5973 thee, which brought thee up5927 out of the land4480 776 of Egypt.4714

2 And it shall be,1961 when ye are come nigh7126 unto413 the battle,4421 that the priest3548 shall approach5066 and speak1696 unto413 the people,5971

3 And shall say559 unto413 them, Hear,8085 O Israel,3478 ye859 approach7131 this day3117 unto battle4421 against5921 your enemies:341 let not408 your hearts3824 faint,7401 fear3372 not,408 and do not408 tremble,2648 neither408 be ye terrified6206 because of4480 6440 them;

4 For3588 the LORD3068 your God430 is he that goeth1980 with5973 you, to fight3898 for you against5973 your enemies,341 to save3467 you.

5 And the officers7860 shall speak1696 unto413 the people,5971 saying,559 What4310 man376 is there that834 hath built1129 a new2319 house,1004 and hath not3808 dedicated2596 it? let him go1980 and return7725 to his house,1004 lest6435 he die4191 in the battle,4421 and another312 man376 dedicate2596 it.

6 And what4310 man376 is he that834 hath planted5193 a vineyard,3754 and hath not3808 yet eaten2490 of it? let him also go1980 and return7725 unto his house,1004 lest6435 he die4191 in the battle,4421 and another312 man376 eat2490 of it.

7 And what4310 man376 is there that834 hath betrothed781 a wife,802 and hath not3808 taken3947 her? let him go1980 and return7725 unto his house,1004 lest6435 he die4191 in the battle,4421 and another312 man376 take3947 her.

8 And the officers7860 shall speak1696 further3254 unto413 the people,5971 and they shall say,559 What4310 man376 is there that is fearful3373 and fainthearted?7390 3824 let him go1980 and return7725 unto his house,1004 lest3808 853 his brethren's251 heart3824 faint4549 as well as his heart.3824

9 And it shall be,1961 when the officers7860 have made an end3615 of speaking1696 unto413 the people,5971 that they shall make6485 captains8269 of the armies6635 to lead7218 the people.5971

10 When3588 thou comest nigh7126 unto413 a city5892 to fight3898 against5921 it, then proclaim7121 peace7965 unto413 it.

11 And it shall be,1961 if518 it make thee answer6030 of peace,7965 and open6605 unto thee, then it shall be,1961 that all3605 the people5971 that is found4672 therein shall be1961 tributaries4522 unto thee, and they shall serve5647 thee.

12 And if518 it will make no peace7999 3808 with5973 thee, but will make6213 war4421 against5973 thee, then thou shalt besiege6696 5921 it:

13 And when the LORD3068 thy God430 hath delivered5414 it into thine hands,3027 thou shalt smite5221 853 every3605 male2138 thereof with the edge6310 of the sword: 2719

14 But7535 the women,802 and the little ones,2945 and the cattle,929 and all3605 that834 is1961 in the city,5892 even all3605 the spoil7998 thereof, shalt thou take962 unto thyself; and thou shalt eat398 853 the spoil7998 of thine enemies,341 which834 the LORD3068 thy God430 hath given5414 thee.

15 Thus3651 shalt thou do6213 unto all3605 the cities5892 which are very3966 far off7350 from4480 thee, which834 are not3808 of the cities4480 5892 of these428 nations.1471

16 But7535 of the cities4480 5892 of these428 people,5971 which834 the LORD3068 thy God430 doth give5414 thee for an inheritance,5159 thou shalt save alive2421 nothing3808 3605 that breatheth: 5397

17 But3588 thou shalt utterly destroy2763 2763 them; namely, the Hittites,2850 and the Amorites,567 the Canaanites,3669 and the Perizzites,6522 the Hivites,2340 and the Jebusites;2983 as834 the LORD3068 thy God430 hath commanded6680 thee:

18 That4616 834 they teach3925 you not3808 to do6213 after all3605 their abominations,8441 which834 they have done6213 unto their gods;430 so should ye sin2398 against the LORD3068 your God.430

19 When3588 thou shalt besiege6696 413 a city5892 a long7227 time,3117 in making war3898 against5921 it to take8610 it, thou shalt not3808 destroy7843 853 the trees6086 thereof by forcing5080 an axe1631 against5921 them: for3588 thou mayest eat398 of4480 them, and thou shalt not3808 cut them down3772 853 (for3588 the tree6086 of the field7704 is man's120 life) to employ935 4480 6440 them in the siege: 4692

20 Only7535 the trees6086 which834 thou knowest3045 that3588 they1931 be not3808 trees6086 for meat,3978 thou shalt destroy7843 and cut them down;3772 and thou shalt build1129 bulwarks4692 against5921 the city5892 that834 1931 maketh6213 war4421 with5973 thee, until5704 it be subdued.3381

Chapter 20

1 WHEN you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

2 And when you come near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

3 And shall say to them, Hear, O Israel, you approach this day to the battle with your enemies; let not your heart faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be terrified because of them;

4 For the LORD your God is he that goes with you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and it is he who shall fight for you with your enemies, and he shall save you.

5 Then the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

6 And what man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not yet trod the grapes of it? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man tread its grapes.

7 And what man is there who has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

8 And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return and go to his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

9 And when the scribes have made an end of speaking to the people, the commanders of the army shall stand at the head of the people.

10 When you come near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

11 And if the city give you answer of peace, and it open to you, then all the people who are found in it shall be servants and tributaries to you, and they shall serve you.

12 But if it will not surrender to you, but will make war with you, then you shall besiege it;

13 And when the LORD your God has delivered it into your hands, you shall slay all its males with the edge of the sword;

14 But the women and the little ones and the cattle and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall plunder for yourselves; and you shall eat of the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God gives you.

15 Thus shall you do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

16 But of the cities of these people which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

17 But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD your God has commanded you;

18 That they may not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done in worshipping their gods; so you should sin in the sight of the LORD your God.

19 When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees, nor wield an axe against them; because you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the trees of the field are not like men to flee from before you at the time of the siege).

20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down that you may build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it is captured.
