Chapter 4

1 If518 thou wilt return,7725 O Israel,3478 saith5002 the LORD,3068 return7725 unto413 me: and if518 thou wilt put away5493 thine abominations8251 out of my sight,4480 6440 then shalt thou not3808 remove.5110

2 And thou shalt swear,7650 The LORD3068 liveth,2416 in truth,571 in judgment,4941 and in righteousness;6666 and the nations1471 shall bless themselves1288 in him, and in him shall they glory.1984

3 For3588 thus3541 saith559 the LORD3068 to the men376 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem,3389 Break up5214 your fallow ground,5215 and sow2232 not408 among413 thorns.6975

4 Circumcise yourselves4135 to the LORD,3068 and take away5493 the foreskins6190 of your heart,3824 ye men376 of Judah3063 and inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem:3389 lest6435 my fury2534 come forth3318 like fire,784 and burn1197 that none369 can quench3518 it, because4480 6440 of the evil7455 of your doings.4611

5 Declare5046 ye in Judah,3063 and publish8085 in Jerusalem;3389 and say,559 Blow8628 ye the trumpet7782 in the land:776 cry,7121 gather together,4390 and say,559 Assemble yourselves,622 and let us go935 into413 the defensed4013 cities.5892

6 Set up5375 the standard5251 toward Zion:6726 retire,5756 stay5975 not:408 for3588 I595 will bring935 evil7451 from the north,4480 6828 and a great1419 destruction.7667

7 The lion738 is come up5927 from his thicket,4480 5441 and the destroyer7843 of the Gentiles1471 is on his way;5265 he is gone forth3318 from his place4480 4725 to make7760 thy land776 desolate;8047 and thy cities5892 shall be laid waste,5327 without4480 369 an inhabitant.3427

8 For5921 this2063 gird2296 you with sackcloth,8242 lament5594 and howl:3213 for3588 the fierce2740 anger639 of the LORD3068 is not3808 turned back7725 from4480 us.

9 And it shall come to pass1961 at that1931 day,3117 saith5002 the LORD,3068 that the heart3820 of the king4428 shall perish,6 and the heart3820 of the princes;8269 and the priests3548 shall be astonished,8074 and the prophets5030 shall wonder.8539

10 Then said559 I, Ah,162 Lord136 GOD!3069 surely403 thou hast greatly deceived5377 5377 this2088 people5971 and Jerusalem,3389 saying,559 Ye shall have1961 peace;7965 whereas the sword2719 reacheth5060 unto5704 the soul.5315

11 At that1931 time6256 shall it be said559 to this2088 people5971 and to Jerusalem,3389 A dry6703 wind7307 of the high places8205 in the wilderness4057 toward the daughter1323 of my people,5971 not3808 to fan,2219 nor3808 to cleanse,1305

12 Even a full4392 wind7307 from those4480 428 places shall come935 unto me: now6258 also1571 will I589 give1696 sentence4941 against them.

13 Behold,2009 he shall come up5927 as clouds,6051 and his chariots4818 shall be as a whirlwind:5492 his horses5483 are swifter7043 than eagles.4480 5404 Woe188 unto us! for3588 we are spoiled.7703

14 O Jerusalem,3389 wash3526 thine heart3820 from wickedness,4480 7451 that4616 thou mayest be saved.3467 How long5704 4970 shall thy vain205 thoughts4284 lodge3885 within7130 thee?

15 For3588 a voice6963 declareth5046 from Dan,4480 1835 and publisheth8085 affliction205 from mount4480 2022 Ephraim.669

16 Make ye mention2142 to the nations;1471 behold,2009 publish8085 against5921 Jerusalem,3389 that watchers5341 come935 from a far4801 country,4480 776 and give out5414 their voice6963 against5921 the cities5892 of Judah.3063

17 As keepers8104 of a field,7704 are1961 they against5921 her round about;4480 5439 because3588 she hath been rebellious4784 against me, saith5002 the LORD.3068

18 Thy way1870 and thy doings4611 have procured6213 these428 things unto thee; this2063 is thy wickedness,7451 because3588 it is bitter,4751 because3588 it reacheth5060 unto5704 thine heart.3820

19 My bowels,4578 my bowels!4578 I am pained3176 at my very7023 heart;3820 my heart3820 maketh a noise1993 in me; I cannot3808 hold my peace,2790 because3588 thou hast heard,8085 O my soul,5315 the sound6963 of the trumpet,7782 the alarm8643 of war.4421

20 Destruction7667 upon5921 destruction7667 is cried;7121 for3588 the whole3605 land776 is spoiled:7703 suddenly6597 are my tents168 spoiled,7703 and my curtains3407 in a moment.7281

21 How long5704 4970 shall I see7200 the standard,5251 and hear8085 the sound6963 of the trumpet?7782

22 For3588 my people5971 is foolish,191 they have not3808 known3045 me; they1992 are sottish5530 children,1121 and they1992 have none3808 understanding:995 they1992 are wise2450 to do evil,7489 but to do good3190 they have no3808 knowledge.3045

23 I beheld7200 853 the earth,776 and, lo,2009 it was without form,8414 and void;922 and the heavens,8064 and they had no369 light.216

24 I beheld7200 the mountains,2022 and, lo,2009 they trembled,7493 and all3605 the hills1389 moved lightly.7043

25 I beheld,7200 and, lo,2009 there was no369 man,120 and all3605 the birds5775 of the heavens8064 were fled.5074

26 I beheld,7200 and, lo,2009 the fruitful place3759 was a wilderness,4057 and all3605 the cities5892 thereof were broken down5422 at the presence4480 6440 of the LORD,3068 and by4480 6440 his fierce2740 anger.639

27 For3588 thus3541 hath the LORD3068 said,559 The whole3605 land776 shall be1961 desolate;8077 yet will I not3808 make6213 a full end.3617

28 For5921 this2063 shall the earth776 mourn,56 and the heavens8064 above4480 4605 be black:6937 because5921 3588 I have spoken1696 it, I have purposed2161 it, and will not3808 repent,5162 neither3808 will I turn back7725 from4480 it.

29 The whole3605 city5892 shall flee1272 for the noise4480 6963 of the horsemen6571 and bowmen;7411 7198 they shall go935 into thickets,5645 and climb up5927 upon the rocks:3710 every3605 city5892 shall be forsaken,5800 and not369 a man376 dwell3427 therein.2004

30 And when thou859 art spoiled,7703 what4100 wilt thou do?6213 Though3588 thou clothest3847 thyself with crimson,8144 though3588 thou deckest5710 thee with ornaments5716 of gold,2091 though3588 thou rentest7167 thy face5869 with painting,6320 in vain7723 shalt thou make thyself fair;3302 thy lovers5689 will despise3988 thee, they will seek1245 thy life.5315

31 For3588 I have heard8085 a voice6963 as of a woman in travail,2470 and the anguish6869 as of her that bringeth forth her first child,1069 the voice6963 of the daughter1323 of Zion,6726 that bewaileth herself,3306 that spreadeth6566 her hands,3709 saying, Woe188 is me now!4994 for3588 my soul5315 is wearied5888 because of murderers.2026

Chapter 4

1 IF you will repent, O Israel, says the LORD, return to me; and if you will put away your abominations from my presence, then you shall not be carried away.

2 And you shall swear, The LORD liveth in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the Gentiles shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

3 For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Light your lamp; and sow not among thorns.

4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath come forth like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

5 Declare in Judah and publish in Jerusalem, and say, Blow the trumpet in the land; cry with a loud voice and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities.

6 Set up the standard toward Zion; be strong, stay not; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.

7 A powerful king is come up like a lion from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he has gone forth from his country to make your land desolate; and your cities shall be laid waste without an inhabitant.

8 For this gird yourself with sackcloth, mourn and lament; for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from you.

9 And it shall come to pass at that day, says the LORD, that the hearts of kings shall fail, and the hearts of princes; and the priests shall be astonished and the prophets shall wonder.

10 Then I said, I beseech thee, O LORD God, surely I have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem; for I have said, You shall have peace; and behold, the sword reaches into the soul.

11 At that time it shall be said to this people and to Jerusalem, As a changing wind in the paths of the wilderness is the way of the daughter of my people, useful neither to fan, nor to cleanse,

12 But a strong wind from those places shall come to me; now also I will pronounce judgment against them.

13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind; his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! for we are plundered.

14 O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts remain in you?

15 For a voice declares from Dan and proclaims affliction from mount Ephraim.

16 Make mention to the nations and publish to Jerusalem, Behold, multitudes of Gentiles are coming from a far country, and they shall shout against the cities of Judah.

17 As keepers of the fields are they against her around about, because she has been rebellious against me, says the LORD.

18 Your ways and your doings have brought these things upon you; this is your wickedness; it is bitter, it has reached to your heart.

19 I am in pain! I am in pain! I suffer in my heart; my heart throbs within me, and does not cease, because my soul has heard the sound of the trumpet and the shouting of war.

20 Destruction shall come upon destruction; for the whole land is plundered; suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains are fallen down.

21 How long shall I see fugitives and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 For my people are foolish; they have not known me; they are stupid children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

23 I looked on the earth, and, lo, it was without form and void; and on the heavens, and they had no light.

24 And I looked on the mountains, and, to, they trembled and all the hills were shattered.

25 I looked, and, behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the air had fled.

26 I looked, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all its towns were destroyed at the presence of the LORD and before his fierce anger.

27 For thus says the LORD God, The whole land shall be desolate; yet I will not make a full end.

28 For this the earth shall mourn and the heavens above shall be darkened; because of everything that I have spoken; I have purposed it and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.

29 Because of the noise of the horsemen and bowmen, the whole city has fled; enter into the forests and climb up upon the rocks; all towns are deserted and no man dwells therein:

30 And you that are plundered, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint your eyes with kohl, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers have left you and they seek your life.

31 For I have heard a voice as of a sick woman, and the anguish as of a woman who is in travail to bring forth her child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who is wearied and who spreads her hands, saying. Woe is me! for my soul faints because of my men who are slain.

18 Thy way1870 and thy doings4611 have procured6213 these428 things unto thee; this2063 is thy wickedness,7451 because3588 it is bitter,4751 because3588 it reacheth5060 unto5704 thine heart.3820

18 Your ways and your doings have brought these things upon you; this is your wickedness; it is bitter, it has reached to your heart.

19 I am in pain! I am in pain! I suffer in my heart; my heart throbs within me, and does not cease, because my soul has heard the sound of the trumpet and the shouting of war.

20 Destruction7667 upon5921 destruction7667 is cried;7121 for3588 the whole3605 land776 is spoiled:7703 suddenly6597 are my tents168 spoiled,7703 and my curtains3407 in a moment.7281

20 Destruction shall come upon destruction; for the whole land is plundered; suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains are fallen down.

21 How long5704 4970 shall I see7200 the standard,5251 and hear8085 the sound6963 of the trumpet?7782

21 How long shall I see fugitives and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 For3588 my people5971 is foolish,191 they have not3808 known3045 me; they1992 are sottish5530 children,1121 and they1992 have none3808 understanding:995 they1992 are wise2450 to do evil,7489 but to do good3190 they have no3808 knowledge.3045

22 For my people are foolish; they have not known me; they are stupid children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

23 I beheld7200 853 the earth,776 and, lo,2009 it was without form,8414 and void;922 and the heavens,8064 and they had no369 light.216

23 I looked on the earth, and, lo, it was without form and void; and on the heavens, and they had no light.

24 I beheld7200 the mountains,2022 and, lo,2009 they trembled,7493 and all3605 the hills1389 moved lightly.7043

24 And I looked on the mountains, and, to, they trembled and all the hills were shattered.

25 I beheld,7200 and, lo,2009 there was no369 man,120 and all3605 the birds5775 of the heavens8064 were fled.5074

25 I looked, and, behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the air had fled.

26 I beheld,7200 and, lo,2009 the fruitful place3759 was a wilderness,4057 and all3605 the cities5892 thereof were broken down5422 at the presence4480 6440 of the LORD,3068 and by4480 6440 his fierce2740 anger.639

26 I looked, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all its towns were destroyed at the presence of the LORD and before his fierce anger.

27 For3588 thus3541 hath the LORD3068 said,559 The whole3605 land776 shall be1961 desolate;8077 yet will I not3808 make6213 a full end.3617

27 For thus says the LORD God, The whole land shall be desolate; yet I will not make a full end.

28 For this the earth shall mourn and the heavens above shall be darkened; because of everything that I have spoken; I have purposed it and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.

29 Because of the noise of the horsemen and bowmen, the whole city has fled; enter into the forests and climb up upon the rocks; all towns are deserted and no man dwells therein:

30 And when thou859 art spoiled,7703 what4100 wilt thou do?6213 Though3588 thou clothest3847 thyself with crimson,8144 though3588 thou deckest5710 thee with ornaments5716 of gold,2091 though3588 thou rentest7167 thy face5869 with painting,6320 in vain7723 shalt thou make thyself fair;3302 thy lovers5689 will despise3988 thee, they will seek1245 thy life.5315

30 And you that are plundered, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint your eyes with kohl, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers have left you and they seek your life.

31 For I have heard a voice as of a sick woman, and the anguish as of a woman who is in travail to bring forth her child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who is wearied and who spreads her hands, saying. Woe is me! for my soul faints because of my men who are slain.
