19 And I commanded,7761 2942 and search hath been made,1240 and it is found7912 that1768 this1791 city7149 of4481 old5957 time3118 hath made insurrection5376 against5922 kings,4430 and that rebellion4776 and sedition849 have been made5648 therein.

20 There have been1934 mighty8624 kings4430 also over5922 Jerusalem,3390 which have ruled7990 over all3606 countries beyond5675 the river;5103 and toll,4061 tribute,1093 and custom,1983 was paid3052 unto them.

3 Зоровавель, Иисус и другие старейшины израильские отвечали им: «Не вам строить с нами Храм Богу нашему! Мы сами построим его ГОСПОДУ, Богу Израиля, как повелел нам Кир, царь персидский».

4 Тогда жители той страны стали делать всё, чтобы у иудеев опустились руки, стали запугивать их, чтобы те не строили.

5 В годы царствования Кира, царя персидского, они подкупали его советников, чтобы расстроить этот замысел, и так продолжалось до правления Дария, царя персидского.

6 При царе Ахашвероше, в начале его правления, они написали жалобу на жителей Иудеи и Иерусалима.

7 В правление Артаксеркса Бишлам, Митредат и Тавэль вместе с теми, кто служил с ними, отправили царю послание, написанное арамейским письмом, по-арамейски.

11 В посланном ими письме говорилось: «Царю Артаксерксу — твои подданные, живущие за Евфратом, обращаются к тебе ныне.

12 Да будет ведомо царю, что иудеи, которые отправились из твоего края к нам, пришли в Иерусалим. Теперь они отстраивают этот город, мятежный и злой: возводят стены, кладут основания.

13 И да будет ведомо царю: если город будет построен и стены возведены, то ни налога, ни подати, ни сбора они платить не станут, и царской казне будет причинен несомненный ущерб.

14 А мы верны царю и не потерпим непочтительного отношения к нему! Потому мы и посылаем царю это донесение.

15 Пусть проверят в летописях твоих предков — ты обнаружишь в них, что это город мятежный, вредный для царей и областей, что от века в нем бунтовали, потому и был этот город разорен.

16 Мы доносим царю: если этот город будет отстроен, возведены его стены — не останется у тебя никаких владений здесь, за Евфратом».

17 Царь послал такой ответ: «Должностному лицу Рехуму и писцу Шимшаю со всеми, кто служит с ними, живущими в Самарии и в остальных областях за Евфратом, — мир вам! Ныне

18 послание, что вы нам отправили, было ясно прочитано передо мной.

19 По моему повелению провели расследование и открыли, что город тот от века восставал против царей, устраивая мятежи и беспорядки.

20 В Иерусалиме правили могучие цари, они владели всеми областями за Евфратом, получая с него налоги, подати и сборы.

21 Издайте повеление, чтобы те люди прекратили строительство города впредь до моего особого указа.

22 Смотрите, исполняйте всё без упущений, дабы не причинить немалого урона царской казне».

23 Когда список с этого послания царя Артаксеркса был прочитан Рехуму и писцу Шимшаю и всем, кто служит с ними, они спешно отправились в Иерусалим к иудеям и силой заставили тех прекратить работу.

24 Строительство Храма Божьего в Иерусалиме было остановлено, и так продолжалось до второго года правления Дария, царя персидского.
