1 И сказал Иов в ответ Элифазу:

2 «О, если бы можно было взвесить мое страдание, всё горе мое разом на весы положить!

3 Тяжелее оно было бы песка морского, оттого и говорю я неистово.

4 Ведь стрелы Всесильного в меня вонзились, ядом их душа моя напоена, ужасы Божьи на меня ополчились!

5 Станет ли реветь осел на пастбище, мычит ли бык, когда корма у него вдоволь?

6 Но едят ли безвкусное без соли? Есть ли вкус у сыворотки?

7 Мне тошно от твоих слов, они для меня как отвратительная пища.

8 О если б на мольбы мои дан был ответ, если б надежду мою Бог воплотил!

9 Если б соизволил Бог уничтожить меня, протянул бы руку Свою — и умертвил меня!

10 Было бы это утешением мне, отрадой средь мук нещадных, ведь заповедей Святого я не отверг.

11 Но где взять силы, чтобы претерпеть? Чего ради за собственную жизнь цепляться?

12 Разве я каменный, чтобы одолеть это? Разве я железный?

13 Не нахожу я в себе подмоги, всякой опоры лишился я.

14 Кто другу своему откажет в любви, тот благоговение пред Богом утратил!

15 А братья мои ненадежны, словно ручьи весенние, словно потоки, переполняющие русла.

16 Темны они от тающего льда, мутны от снега,

17 но потом мелеют и исчезают, в летний зной пересыхают бесследно.

18 Направляются к ним караваны, забредают в пустыню — и гибнут.

19 Ищут их караваны теманские, путники сабейские на них надеются,

20 но обманутся они в своих надеждах, наткнутся на русла иссохшие — придут в отчаянье.

21 Вы теперь тем ручьям уподобились, увидели ужасное — и отшатнулись в испуге.

22 Разве я просил вас: „Подайте! Из богатств ваших заплатите за меня выкуп“?

23 Или: „От руки притеснителя спасите меня, выкупите у угнетателя“?

24 Что ж, наставьте меня — и я умолкну, объясните, в чем я неправ?

25 Обидны бывают слова справедливые, но обличения ваши что дают?

26 Придумываете вы словеса для упреков, а слова отчаявшегося для вас — что ветер.

27 Вы о сироте бросаете жребий, кому он достанется, и друга своего продаете.

28 А я прошу вас: на меня взгляните — стану ли я лгать вам в лицо?

29 Отступитесь, чтобы не вышло несправедливости, отступитесь, ибо я прав!

30 Разве есть на устах моих несправедливость, неужели язык мой не распознаёт зла?
