Chapter 17

1 And the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 unto413 me, saying,559

2 Son1121 of man,120 put forth2330 a riddle,2420 and speak4911 a parable4912 unto413 the house1004 of Israel;3478

3 And say,559 Thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 A great1419 eagle5404 with great1419 wings,3671 long-winged,750 83 full4392 of feathers,5133 which834 had divers colors,7553 came935 unto413 Lebanon,3844 and took3947 853 the highest branch6788 of the cedar: 730

4 He cropped off6998 853 the top7218 of his young twigs,3242 and carried935 it into413 a land776 of traffic;3667 he set7760 it in a city5892 of merchants.7402

5 He took3947 also of the seed4480 2233 of the land,776 and planted5414 it in a fruitful2233 field;7704 he placed3947 it by5921 great7227 waters,4325 and set7760 it as a willow tree.6851

6 And it grew,6779 and became1961 a spreading5628 vine1612 of low8217 stature,6967 whose branches1808 turned6437 toward413 him, and the roots8328 thereof were1961 under8478 him: so it became1961 a vine,1612 and brought forth6213 branches,905 and shot forth7971 sprigs.6288

7 There was1961 also another259 great1419 eagle5404 with great1419 wings3671 and many7227 feathers:5133 and, behold,2009 this2063 vine1612 did bend3719 her roots8328 toward him, and shot forth7971 her branches1808 toward5921 him, that he might water8248 it by the furrows4480 6170 of her plantation.4302

8 It1931 was planted8362 in413 a good2896 soil7704 by413 great7227 waters,4325 that it might bring forth6213 branches,6057 and that it might bear5375 fruit,6529 that it might be1961 a goodly155 vine.1612

9 Say559 thou, Thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 Shall it prosper?6743 shall he not3808 pull up5423 853 the roots8328 thereof, and cut off7082 the fruit6529 thereof, that it wither?3001 it shall wither3001 in all3605 the leaves2965 of her spring,6780 even without3808 great1419 power2220 or many7227 people5971 to pluck it up5375 853 by the roots4480 8328 thereof.

10 Yea, behold,2009 being planted,8362 shall it prosper?6743 shall it not3808 utterly wither,3001 3001 when the east6921 wind7307 toucheth5060 it? it shall wither3001 in5921 the furrows6170 where it grew.6780

11 Moreover the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 unto413 me, saying,559

12 Say559 now4994 to the rebellious4805 house,1004 Know3045 ye not3808 what4100 these428 things mean? tell559 them, Behold,2009 the king4428 of Babylon894 is come935 to Jerusalem,3389 and hath taken3947 853 the king4428 thereof, and the princes8269 thereof, and led935 them with413 him to Babylon;894

13 And hath taken3947 of the king's4410 seed,4480 2233 and made3772 a covenant1285 with854 him, and hath taken935 an oath423 of him: he hath also taken3947 the mighty352 of the land: 776

14 That the kingdom4467 might be1961 base,8217 that it might not1115 lift itself up,5375 but that by keeping8104 853 of his covenant1285 it might stand.5975

15 But he rebelled4775 against him in sending7971 his ambassadors4397 into Egypt,4714 that they might give5414 him horses5483 and much7227 people.5971 Shall he prosper?6743 shall he escape4422 that doeth6213 such428 things? or shall he break6565 the covenant,1285 and be delivered?4422

16 As I589 live,2416 saith5002 the Lord136 GOD,3069 surely518 3808 in the place4725 where the king4428 dwelleth that made him king,4427 853 whose834 853 oath423 he despised,959 and whose834 853 covenant1285 he broke,6565 even with854 him in the midst8432 of Babylon894 he shall die.4191

17 Neither3808 shall Pharaoh6547 with his mighty1419 army2428 and great7227 company6951 make6213 for him in the war,4421 by casting up8210 mounts,5550 and building1129 forts,1785 to cut off3772 many7227 persons: 5315

18 Seeing he despised959 the oath423 by breaking6565 the covenant,1285 when, lo,2009 he had given5414 his hand,3027 and hath done6213 all3605 these428 things, he shall not3808 escape.4422

19 Therefore3651 thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 As I589 live,2416 surely518 3808 mine oath423 that834 he hath despised,959 and my covenant1285 that834 he hath broken,6565 even it will I recompense5414 upon his own head.7218

20 And I will spread6566 my net7568 upon5921 him, and he shall be taken8610 in my snare,4686 and I will bring935 him to Babylon,894 and will plead8199 with854 him there8033 for his trespass4603 that834 he hath trespassed4603 against me.

21 And all3605 his fugitives4015 with all3605 his bands102 shall fall5307 by the sword,2719 and they that remain7604 shall be scattered6566 toward all3605 winds:7307 and ye shall know3045 that3588 I589 the LORD3068 have spoken1696 it.

22 Thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD;3069 I589 will also take3947 of the highest branch4480 6788 of the high7311 cedar,730 and will set5414 it; I will crop off6998 from the top4480 7218 of his young twigs3127 a tender one,7390 and will plant8362 it upon5921 a high1364 mountain2022 and eminent: 8524

23 In the mountain2022 of the height4791 of Israel3478 will I plant8362 it: and it shall bring forth5375 boughs,6057 and bear6213 fruit,6529 and be1961 a goodly117 cedar:730 and under8478 it shall dwell7931 all3605 fowl6833 of every3605 wing;3671 in the shadow6738 of the branches1808 thereof shall they dwell.7931

24 And all3605 the trees6086 of the field7704 shall know3045 that3588 I589 the LORD3068 have brought down8213 the high1364 tree,6086 have exalted1361 the low8217 tree,6086 have dried up3001 the green3892 tree,6086 and have made the dry3002 tree6086 to flourish:6524 I589 the LORD3068 have spoken1696 and have done6213 it.

Chapter 17

1 AND the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

2 Son of man, put forth a riddle and speak a parable to the house of Israel,

3 And say, Thus says the LORD God: A great eagle with large wings and long pinions and fully developed claws, and thickly feathered, came to Lebanon and took the choicest branch of the cedar:

4 He cropped off the topmost of its tender twigs, and carried it to the land of Canaan; and he set it in a city of merchants.

5 He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in uncultivated land; he placed it by many waters, and then set a watchman over it.

6 And it sprang up and grew into a spreading vine of low stature, so that its branches turned toward him and its roots were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches and shot forth tendrils.

7 And, behold, there was also another great eagle with large wings and many claws: and, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot forth its tendrils toward him, that he might water the soil where it was planted.

8 For it was planted in a good field, by many waters that it might bring forth branches and bear fruit and become a goodly vine.

9 Say now, Thus says the LORD God: It shall not prosper, but its roots shall be cut off, and its fruit shall dry up; and all the foliage which it has put forth shall wither; and it will not require a strong arm, nor many people to pluck it up by its roots.

10 Yea, behold, being planted, it shall not prosper; when the east wind strikes it, it shall wither in the soil where it grew.

11 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

12 Say now to the rebellious house, Do you know what these things mean? Tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is coming to Jerusalem, and he shall take the king and the princes thereof and carry them with him to Babylon;

13 And he shall take one of the offspring of the royal family, and make a covenant with him and take an oath of him; and he shall carry away the rulers of the land, so that they may not boast again,

14 That the kingdom might be humbled, and that they might keep his covenant, and stand by him.

15 But he shall revolt against the king of Babylon, and shall send his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and a large army. But he who does such things shall not prosper, nor shall he be delivered.

16 As I live, says the LORD God, surely in the very place where dwells the king of Babylon, who made him king and he despised my oath and nullified my covenant, even in the midst of Babylon, he shall die.

17 Neither shall Pharaoh fight against him with a great army nor with many horses, but by casting up mounds and building forts shall he destroy many lives.

18 Because he has despised the oaths and nullified the covenant, he shall surrender, but he shall not be delivered, because he has done all these things.

19 Therefore thus says the LORD God: As I live, because he has despised my oaths and nullified my covenant, I will punish him for it.

20 And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in it, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, and judge him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.

21 And all his noble men and all his friends shall fall by the sword, and those that remain shall be scattered to all the winds; and you shall know that I the LORD have spoken it.

22 Thus says the LORD God: I will also take one of the choicest branches of the highest cedar, and I will clip it; I will crop off from the top of its young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon high and lofty mountains;

23 On the mountains of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar; and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of its branches shall they rest.

24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have made dry the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have made dry the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.
