Chapter 30

1 The words1697 of Agur94 the son1121 of Jakeh,3348 even the prophecy:4853 the man1397 spoke5002 unto Ithiel,384 even unto Ithiel384 and Ucal,401

2 Surely3588 I595 am more brutish1198 than any man,4480 376 and have not3808 the understanding998 of a man.120

3 I neither3808 learned3925 wisdom,2451 nor have3045 the knowledge1847 of the holy.6918

4 Who4310 hath ascended up5927 into heaven,8064 or descended?3381 who4310 hath gathered622 the wind7307 in his fists?2651 who4310 hath bound6887 the waters4325 in a garment?8071 who4310 hath established6965 all3605 the ends657 of the earth?776 what4100 is his name,8034 and what4100 is his son's1121 name,8034 if3588 thou canst tell?3045

5 Every3605 word565 of God433 is pure:6884 he1931 is a shield4043 unto them that put their trust2620 in him.

6 Add3254 thou not408 unto5921 his words,1697 lest6435 he reprove3198 thee, and thou be found a liar.3576

7 Two8147 things have I required7592 of4480 854 thee; deny4513 4480 me them not408 before2962 I die: 4191

8 Remove far7368 from4480 me vanity7723 and lies:1697 3577 give5414 me neither408 poverty7389 nor riches;6239 feed2963 me with food3899 convenient2706 for me:

9 Lest6435 I be full,7646 and deny3584 thee, and say,559 Who4310 is the LORD?3068 or lest6435 I be poor,3423 and steal,1589 and take8610 the name8034 of my God430 in vain.

10 Accuse3960 not408 a servant5650 unto413 his master,113 lest6435 he curse7043 thee, and thou be found guilty.816

11 There is a generation1755 that curseth7043 their father,1 and doth not3808 bless1288 their mother.517

12 There is a generation1755 that are pure2889 in their own eyes,5869 and yet is not3808 washed7364 from their filthiness.4480 6675

13 There is a generation,1755 O how4100 lofty7311 are their eyes!5869 and their eyelids6079 are lifted up.5375

14 There is a generation,1755 whose teeth8127 are as swords,2719 and their jaw teeth4973 as knives,3979 to devour398 the poor6041 from off the earth,4480 776 and the needy34 from among men.4480 120

15 The horseleach5936 hath two8147 daughters,1323 crying, Give,3051 give.3051 There are three7969 2007 things that are never3808 satisfied,7646 yea, four702 things say559 not,3808 It is enough: 1952

16 The grave;7585 and the barren6115 womb;7356 the earth776 that is not3808 filled7646 with water;4325 and the fire784 that saith559 not,3808 It is enough.1952

17 The eye5869 that mocketh3932 at his father,1 and despiseth936 to obey3349 his mother,517 the ravens6158 of the valley5158 shall pick it out,5365 and the young1121 eagles5404 shall eat398 it.

18 There be three7969 things which are too wonderful6381 for4480 me, yea, four702 which I know3045 not: 3808

19 The way1870 of an eagle5404 in the air;8064 the way1870 of a serpent5175 upon5921 a rock;6697 the way1870 of a ship591 in the midst3820 of the sea;3220 and the way1870 of a man1397 with a maid.5959

20 Such3651 is the way1870 of an adulterous5003 woman;802 she eateth,398 and wipeth4229 her mouth,6310 and saith,559 I have done6466 no3808 wickedness.205

21 For8478 three7969 things the earth776 is disquieted,7264 and for8478 four702 which it cannot3808 3201 bear: 5375

22 For8478 a servant5650 when3588 he reigneth;4427 and a fool5036 when3588 he is filled7646 with meat;3899

23 For8478 an odious8130 woman when3588 she is married;1166 and a handmaid8198 that3588 is heir3423 to her mistress.1404

24 There be four702 things which are little6996 upon the earth,776 but they1992 are exceeding wise:2449 2450

25 The ants5244 are a people5971 not3808 strong,5794 yet they prepare3559 their meat3899 in the summer;7019

26 The conies8227 are but a feeble3808 6099 folk,5971 yet make7760 they their houses1004 in the rocks;5553

27 The locusts697 have no369 king,4428 yet go they forth3318 all3605 of them by bands;2686

28 The spider8079 taketh hold8610 with her hands,3027 and is in kings'4428 palaces.1964

29 There be three7969 things which go6806 well,3190 yea, four702 are comely3190 in going: 1980

30 A lion3918 which is strongest1368 among beasts,929 and turneth not away3808 7725 for4480 6440 any;3605

31 A greyhound;2223 4975 a he goat8495 also;176 and a king,4428 against5973 whom there is no408 rising up.6965

32 If518 thou hast done foolishly5034 in lifting up thyself,5375 or if518 thou hast thought evil,2161 lay thine hand3027 upon thy mouth.6310

33 Surely3588 the churning4330 of milk2461 bringeth forth3318 butter,2529 and the wringing4330 of the nose639 bringeth forth3318 blood:1818 so the forcing4330 of wrath639 bringeth forth3318 strife.7379

Proverbs

Chapter 30

1 THESE are the words of Agur the son of Jakeh, who prophesied and received power, He said to Ithliel,

2 Surely, I am weak minded, and have not the understanding of men.

3 I know not wisdom, nor have I learned the knowledge of the holy men.

4 Tell me, Who has ascended up into heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in a handkerchief? Who has established all the borders of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if you can tell?

5 Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who put their trust in him.

6 Do not add to his words; lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.

7 Two things have I asked of thee; deny them not to me before I die:

8 Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; give me life sufficient

9 Lest I be full, and lie, and say, Who is the LORD? Or lest I be poor and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

10 Do not deliver a slave to his master, lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.

11 There is a generation that curses their fathers, and does not bless their mothers.

12 There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, and vet is not washed from their filthiness.

13 There is a generation. O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

14 There is a generation, whose teeth are like swords, and their jaw teeth like knives, to devour the poor from off the earth and the needy from among men.

15 A gluttonous man has three beloved daughters. There are three things that are never satisfied; yea, a fourth that never says, It is enough:

16 Sheol; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that never says, It is enough.

17 The eye that mocks at his father and despises the old age of his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out and the young vultures shall eat it.

18 There are three things that are hidden from me, yea, four which I do not know:

19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man in his youth.

20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no evil.

21 Under three things the earth quakes, and under four it cannot endure:

22 Under a servant when he reigns: and under a fool when he is filled with bread;

23 Under an odious woman when she is married; and under a maidservant who ousts her mistress.

24 There are four things that are small upon the earth, but they are wiser than wise men:

25 The ants which have no strength, yet they provide their food in the summer;

26 The conies who lack strength, and yet they make their houses in the rocks;

27 The locusts who have no king, and yet they all gather together.

28 The chameleon which takes hold with her hands, but is found in kings' palaces.

29 There are three things that go well, yea, four are graceful in their going:

30 The lion which is mightiest among beasts, and neither fears nor turns back before any of the beasts:

31 The cock that walks proudly among the chickens; the he-goat that goes before the flock; and a king who speaks among the people.

32 Covet not that you may not be reproached; do not feed yourself by things acquired wrongfully.

33 Out of the richness of the milk comes forth butter; and if you press your hand on a raw grain of wheat, it will bring forth juices; thus out of the strife goes forth judgment.
