Chapter 36

1 AND it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 Take a scroll of a book and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.

3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do to them; that they may turn every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their trespasses and their sins.

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which he had spoken to him, upon a scroll of a book.

5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot enter into the house of the LORD;

6 Therefore go and read the scroll which you have written from my mouth, the words of the LORD, in the presence of the people in the LORD'S house on a fast day; and also you shall read them in the presence of all the people of Judah who come out of their cities.

7 It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and every one will turn from his evil way; so that the LORD may cease from the evil which he has pronounced against them; for great is the anger and the fury that he has pronounced against this people.

8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the scroll the words of the LORD in the LORD'S house.

9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, when all the people in Jerusalem had proclaimed a fast before the LORD, Baruch read before all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.

10 Then Baruch the scribe read the words of the LORD which Jeremiah the prophet had spoken in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe in the upper court at the entry of the new gate of the LORD'S house before all the people.

11 When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the book,

12 He went down from the king's house to the scribes' chamber; and he saw all the princes seated there: Elishama the scribe, and Belaiah the son of Shemaiah and Eliathan the son of Achbor and Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah and all the princes.

13 Then Michaiah told them all the words that he had heard when Baruch the scribe read the scroll in the presence of the people.

14 Then all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, Take in your hand the scroll which you have read before the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.

15 And the princes said to him, Sit down now and read it in our presence; so Baruch read it in their presence.

16 Now it came to pass when they had heard all the words that they were alarmed, looking one to another, and they said to Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.

17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, how did you write all these words at his mouth?

18 Then Baruch answered them, Jeremiah dictated all these words to me and I wrote them with ink in the book.

19 Then the princes said to Baruch, Go hide, you and Jeremiah; and let no man know where you are.

20 Then the princes went to the king in the courtyard, but they placed the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the presence of the king.

21 So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll; and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and Jehudi read it before the king and before all the princes who stood before the king.

22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month; and there was a fire burning on the brazier before him.

23 And it came to pass that when Jehudi had read three or four pages, the king cut it with the scribe's penknife and threw it into the coals of fire; and the whole scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the brazier.

24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants were afraid, nor did they tear their garments when they heard all these words.

25 Nevertheless Eliathan and Belaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them.

26 And the king commanded Jerahmael the king's son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdael to seize Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the scribe; but the LORD hid them.

27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,

28 Return from hiding and take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned.

29 And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus says the LORD: You have burned this scroll, saying, Why have you written in it and said, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land and exterminate from it both man and beast?

30 Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, He shall have not an heir to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat and in the night to the frost.

31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the men of Judah all the evil things that I have pronounced against them; because they did not hearken to my voice.

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it as Jeremiah dictated all the words which were written in the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and he added to them many similar words.

3 ob vielleicht das Haus1004 Juda3063, wo sie hören all das Unglück7451, das ich ihnen gedenke2803 zu8085 tun6213, sich7725 bekehren wollten, ein376 jeglicher von seinem bösen7451 Wesen1870, damit ich ihnen ihre Missetat und2403 Sünde5771 vergeben5545 könnte.

4 Da rief7121 Jeremia3414 Baruch1263, den Sohn1121 Nerias5374. Derselbige Baruch1263 schrieb3789 in ein Buch4039 aus dem Munde6310 Jeremias alle Reden1697 des HErrn3068, die er zu ihm geredet hatte1696.

5 Und Jeremia3414 gebot6680 Baruch1263 und sprach559: Ich bin gefangen6113, daß ich nicht kann3201 in des HErrn3068 Haus1004 gehen935.

6 Du aber gehe935 hinein935 und lies das1697 Buch4039, darein du des HErrn3068 Reden aus meinem Munde6310 geschrieben hast3789, vor3117 dem Volk5971 im Hause1004 des HErrn3068 am Fasttage6685; und sollst sie7121 auch lesen7121 vor241 den Ohren241 des ganzen Juda3063, die aus ihren Städten5892 hereinkommen,

7 ob sie vielleicht sich5307 mit Beten8467 vor6440 dem HErrn3068 demütigen wollten und sich7725 bekehren, ein376 jeglicher von seinem bösen7451 Wesen1870; denn der Zorn639 und Grimm2534 ist groß1419, davon der HErr3068 wider dies Volk5971 geredet hat1696.

8 Und Baruch1263, der Sohn1121 Nerias5374, tat alles1697, wie ihm der Prophet5030 Jeremia3414 befohlen6680 hatte6213, daß er7121 die Reden des HErrn3068 aus dem Buch5612 läse im Hause1004 des HErrn3068.

9 Es begab sich aber im fünften2549 Jahr8141 Jojakims3079, des Sohns Josias2977, des Königs4428 Judas, im neunten8671 Monden2320, daß man7121 ein Fasten6685 verkündigte vor6440 dem HErrn3068 allem Volk5971 zu Jerusalem3389 und1121 allem Volk5971, das aus den Städten5892 Judas gen Jerusalem3389 kommt935.

11 Da nun Michaja4321, der Sohn1121 Gemarjas1587, des Sohns Saphans8227, alle Reden1697 des HErrn3068 gehöret hatte8085 aus dem Buch5612,

12 ging er hinab3381 in des Königs4428 Haus1004, in die3427 Kanzlei3957. Und siehe, daselbst saßen alle Fürsten8269: Elisama476, der Kanzler5608, Delaja1806, der Sohn1121 Semajas8098, Elnathan494, der Sohn1121 Achbors5907, Gemarja1587, der Sohn1121 Saphans8227, und Zedekia6667, der Sohn1121 Hananjas2608, samt allen Fürsten8269.

13 Und Michaja4321 zeigte ihnen an5046 alle Reden1697, die er7121 gehöret hatte8085, da Baruch1263 las aus dem Buch5612 vor den Ohren241 des Volks5971.

14 Da sandten alle Fürsten8269 Judi3065, den Sohn1121 Nethanjas5418, des7971 Sohns Selemjas8018, des Sohns Chusis3570, nach Baruch1263 und ließen ihm3027 sagen559:. Nimm3947 das Buch4039, daraus du vor dem Volk5971 gelesen hast7121, mit241 dir und komm3212! Und Baruch1263, der Sohn Nerias5374, nahm3947 das Buch4039 mit sich3027 und kam935 zu ihnen.

15 Und sie7121 sprachen559 zu ihm: Setze dich3427 und lies, daß wir‘s hören! Und Baruch1263 las7121 ihnen vor241 ihren Ohren241.

16 Und376 da sie5046 alle die Reden1697 höreten, entsetzten sie5046 sich6342 einer413 gegen den andern7453 und sprachen559 zu8085 Baruch1263: Wir wollen alle diese Reden1697 dem Könige4428 anzeigen.

17 Und fragten7592 den Baruch1263: Sage559 uns, wie hast3789 du alle diese Reden5046 aus seinem Munde6310 geschrieben?

18 Baruch1263 sprach559 zu ihnen: Er las mir alle diese Reden1697 aus seinem Munde6310, und ich schrieb3789 sie7121 mit Tinte1773 ins Buch5612.

19 Da sprachen559 die Fürsten8269 zu Baruch1263: Gehe3212 hin und verbirg dich5641 mit Jeremia3414, daß niemand376 wisse3045, wo375 ihr seid!

20 Sie6485 aber gingen935 hinein zum Könige4428 in den Vorhof2691 und ließen das1697 Buch4039 behalten in der Kammer3957 Elisamas476, des Kanzlers5608, und sagten vor241 dem Könige4428 an5046 alle diese Reden.

21 Da sandte7971 der König4428 den Judi3065, das Buch4039 zu5921 holen3947. Derselbige nahm3947 es aus der Kammer3957 Elisamas476, des Kanzlers5608. Und5975 Judi3065 las7121 vor241 dem Könige4428 und allen Fürsten8269, die bei dem Könige4428 stunden.

22 Der König4428 aber saß3427 im254 Winterhause, im neunten8671 Monden2320, vor6440 dem Kamin.

23 Als aber Judi3065 drei7969 oder vier702 Blatt1817 gelesen hatte, zerschnitt7167 er‘s7121 mit einem Schreibmesser und warf7993 es ins Feuer784, das im254 Kaminherde war5608, bis das Buch4039 ganz8552 verbrannte im254 Feuer784.

24 Und niemand entsetzte sich6342 noch zerriß7167 seine Kleider899, weder der König4428 noch seine Knechte5650, so doch alle diese Reden1697 gehöret hatten8085.

25 Wiewohl Elnathan494, Delaja1806 und Gemarja1587 baten6293 den König4428, er wollte das Buch4039 nicht verbrennen8313; aber er gehorchte8085 ihnen nicht.

26 Dazu gebot6680 noch der König4428 Jerahmeel3396, dem Sohn1121 Hamelechs, und Seraja8304, dem Sohn1121 Asriels5837, und Selemja8018, dem Sohn1121 Abdeels5655, sie3947 sollten Baruch1263, den Schreiber5608, und Jeremia3414, den Propheten5030, greifen. Aber der HErr3068 hatte sie verborgen5641.

27 Da geschah des HErrn3068 Wort1697 zu Jeremia3414, nachdem310 der König4428 das1697 Buch4039 und die Reden, so Baruch1263 hatte geschrieben3789 aus dem Munde6310 Jeremias, verbrannt8313 hatte, und sprach559:

28 Nimm3947 dir wiederum7725 ein ander312 Buch4039 und schreibe3789 alle vorigen7223 Reden1697 darein, die im ersten7223 Buch4039 stunden, welches Jojakim3079, der König4428 Judas, verbrannt hat8313,

29 und sage559 von Jojakim3079, dem Könige4428 Judas: So spricht der HErr3068; Du559 hast3789 dies Buch4039 verbrannt und gesagt559: Warum hast du559 darein geschrieben, daß der König4428 von Babel894 werde8313 kommen935 und dies Land776 verderben7843 und machen7673, daß weder Leute120 noch Vieh929 drinnen mehr sein935 werden?

30 Darum spricht559 der HErr3068 von Jojakim3079, dem Könige4428 Judas: Er7993 soll keiner von den Seinen auf dem Stuhl3678 Davids1732 sitzen3427, und sein Leichnam5038 soll hingeworfen des Tages3117 in der Hitze2721 und des Nachts3915 in dem Frost7140 liegen.

31 Und376 ich will935 ihn und seinen Samen2233 und seine Knechte5650 heimsuchen um ihrer Missetat5771 willen. Und ich will über6485 sie3427 und über die Bürger zu8085 Jerusalem3389 und über die in Juda3063 kommen lassen all das Unglück, das ich ihnen geredet habe1696, und sie doch nicht7451 gehorchen.

32 Da nahm3947 Jeremia3414 ein ander312 Buch4039 und gab5414 es Baruch1263, dem Sohn1121 Nerias5374, dem Schreiber5608. Der schrieb3789 darein aus dem Munde6310 Jeremias alle die1992 Reden1697, so in dem Buch5612 stunden, das1697 Jojakim3079, der König4428 Judas, hatte mit Feuer784 verbrennen8313 lassen; und über dieselbigen wurden der Reden noch3254 viel mehr7227, denn jener waren.

24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants were afraid, nor did they tear their garments when they heard all these words.

25 Nevertheless Eliathan and Belaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them.

27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,

29 And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus says the LORD: You have burned this scroll, saying, Why have you written in it and said, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land and exterminate from it both man and beast?

30 Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, He shall have not an heir to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat and in the night to the frost.

30 Darum spricht559 der HErr3068 von Jojakim3079, dem Könige4428 Judas: Er7993 soll keiner von den Seinen auf dem Stuhl3678 Davids1732 sitzen3427, und sein Leichnam5038 soll hingeworfen des Tages3117 in der Hitze2721 und des Nachts3915 in dem Frost7140 liegen.

31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the men of Judah all the evil things that I have pronounced against them; because they did not hearken to my voice.

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it as Jeremiah dictated all the words which were written in the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and he added to them many similar words.
