Chapter 4

1 AND Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man for the LORD.

2 And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in the course of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to the LORD.

4 And Abel also brought of the first-born of his flock and of the fatlings thereof. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and with his offering;

5 But with Cain and with his offering he was not pleased. So Cain was exceedingly displeased, and his countenance was sad.

6 And the LORD said to Cain, Why are you displeased? and why is your countenance sad?

7 Behold, if you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. You should return to your brother, and he shall be subject to you.

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go to the plain; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?

10 And the LORD said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground.

11 And from henceforth, you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand;

12 When you till the ground, it shall no more yield to you its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shall you be on the earth.

13 And Cain said to the LORD, My transgression is too great to be forgiven.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from thy face shall I be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth; and it shall come to pass, that whoever finds me shall slay me.

15 And the LORD said to him, It shall not be so; whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, so that anyone who may find him may not kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he started to build a village, and named the village after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methusael: and Methusael begot Lamech.

19 And Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bore Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents, and are owners of cattle.

21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the guitar and harp.

22 And Zillah also bore Tubal-cain, a craftsman in every work of brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to my speech; for I have killed a man by wounding him, and a boy by beating him.

24 For if Cain is to be avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 And Adam knew his wife Eve again; and she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Seth; For God, she said, has given me another offspring instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26 And to Seth also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD.

1 Адам познал свою жену Еву, и она родила ребёнка, которого назвали Каином. «С помощью Господа я сотворила мужчину», — сказала Ева.

2 После этого она родила ещё одного сына, брата Каина, Авеля. Авель стал пастухом, а Каин — земледельцем.

3 Когда пришло время жатвы, Каин принёс в дар Господу некоторые из выращенных им плодов земли, Авель же принес в дар животных из своего стада: лучшие части самых тучных овец. Господь принял дар Авеля,

5 а подношение Каина не принял. Каин был этим очень опечален и рассержен.

6 Господь спросил Каина: «Почему ты сердишься? Чем опечален ты?

7 Если будешь делать добро, то будешь праведен передо Мной, и тогда Я приму тебя. Но если будешь делать зло, то твоя жизнь будет греховна. И тогда твой грех захочет править тобой, ты же должен сам править грехом».

8 Каин сказал своему брату Авелю: «Пойдём в поле». Когда они пришли в поле, Каин напал на своего брата Авеля и убил его.

9 Некоторое время спустя Господь спросил Каина: «Где твой брат Авель?» Каин ответил: «Не знаю. Разве я сторож моему брату?»

10 «Что же ты сделал? — сказал тогда Господь. — Кровь твоего брата словно голос взывает ко Мне из земли.

11 И теперь Я проклинаю тебя и эту землю, на которой ты трудишься. Тебе больше не собирать с неё урожая, так как ты заставил её испить кровь своего брата.

12 Когда будешь возделывать землю, она не будет давать тебе богатый урожай, как это было раньше. У тебя не будет на земле дома, и ты будешь скитаться с места на место».

13 Каин ответил Господу: «Вынести такое наказание свыше моих сил!

14 Ты изгоняешь меня с моей земли, и я не смогу больше быть рядом с Тобой! У меня не будет дома, мне придётся скитаться с места на место, и всякий, кого я повстречаю, сможет убить меня!»

15 «Если кто-нибудь убьёт тебя, Каин, — ответил ему Господь, — Я накажу того во много раз страшнее». Господь пометил его, и эта отметина являлась предостережением всем встречным: увидев её, никто не посмеет убить Каина.

16 Каин ушёл от Господа и поселился в земле Нод, к востоку от Эдема.

17 Он познал свою жену, и она родила сына, которого назвали Енохом. Каин построил город и назвал его Енох, по имени своего сына.

18 У Еноха был сын Ирод, у Ирода был сын Мехиаель, у Мехиаеля был сын Мафусал, у Мафусала был сын Ламех.

19 Ламех взял в жёны двух женщин: одну жену звали Ада, другую — Цилла.

20 Ада родила Иавала, он стал отцом всех живущих в шатрах и добывающих пропитание скотоводством.

21 У Ады был ещё один сын, Иувал, брат Иавала, он стал отцом играющих на арфе и флейте.

22 Цилла родила Фувала-Каина, отца кующих орудия из железа и бронзы. У него была сестра по имени Наама.

23 Ламех сказал своим жёнам: «Услышьте мои слова, Ада и Цилла! Слушайте, жёны Ламеха! Человек задел меня, и я убил его! Ребёнок ударил меня, и я убил его!

24 Наказание за убийство Каина было великое, но наказание за моё убийство будет во много раз страшнее!»

25 Адам познал Еву, и она родила ещё

26 У Сифа также родился сын, и он назвал его Еносом. К тому времени люди стали поклоняться Господу.

5 а подношение Каина не принял. Каин был этим очень опечален и рассержен.

6 And the LORD said to Cain, Why are you displeased? and why is your countenance sad?

6 Господь спросил Каина: «Почему ты сердишься? Чем опечален ты?

7 Behold, if you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. You should return to your brother, and he shall be subject to you.

7 Если будешь делать добро, то будешь праведен передо Мной, и тогда Я приму тебя. Но если будешь делать зло, то твоя жизнь будет греховна. И тогда твой грех захочет править тобой, ты же должен сам править грехом».

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go to the plain; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

8 Каин сказал своему брату Авелю: «Пойдём в поле». Когда они пришли в поле, Каин напал на своего брата Авеля и убил его.

9 And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?

9 Некоторое время спустя Господь спросил Каина: «Где твой брат Авель?» Каин ответил: «Не знаю. Разве я сторож моему брату?»

12 Когда будешь возделывать землю, она не будет давать тебе богатый урожай, как это было раньше. У тебя не будет на земле дома, и ты будешь скитаться с места на место».

13 And Cain said to the LORD, My transgression is too great to be forgiven.

13 Каин ответил Господу: «Вынести такое наказание свыше моих сил!

14 Ты изгоняешь меня с моей земли, и я не смогу больше быть рядом с Тобой! У меня не будет дома, мне придётся скитаться с места на место, и всякий, кого я повстречаю, сможет убить меня!»

15 And the LORD said to him, It shall not be so; whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, so that anyone who may find him may not kill him.

15 «Если кто-нибудь убьёт тебя, Каин, — ответил ему Господь, — Я накажу того во много раз страшнее». Господь пометил его, и эта отметина являлась предостережением всем встречным: увидев её, никто не посмеет убить Каина.
