Chapter 9

1 Then3767 truly3303 the first4413 covenant had2192 also2532 ordinances1345 of divine2999 service,2999 and a worldly2886 sanctuary.39

2 For there was a tabernacle4633 made;2680 the first,4413 wherein1722 3757 was the candlestick,3087 and the table,5132 and the show bread;4286 740 which3748 is called3004 the sanctuary.39

3 And after3326 the second1208 veil,2665 the tabernacle4633 which3588 is called3004 the Holiest39 of all;

4 Which had2192 the golden5552 censer,2369 and the ark2787 of the covenant1242 overlaid4028 round3840 about3840 with gold,5553 wherein1722 3757 was the golden5552 pot4713 that had2192 manna,3131 and Aaron's2 rod4464 that budded,985 and the tables4109 of the covenant;1242

5 And over5231 it the cherubim5502 of glory1391 shadowing2683 the mercy seat;2435 of which3739 we cannot3756 1410 now3568 speak3004 particularly.2596 3313

6 Now1161 when these5130 things were thus3779 ordained,2680 the priests2409 went1524 always1275 into1519 the first4413 tabernacle,4633 accomplishing2005 the service2999 of God.

7 But into1519 the second1208 went the high749 priest749 alone3441 once530 every year,1763 not without5565 blood,129 which3739 he offered4374 for himself,1438 and for the errors51 of the people:2992

8 The Holy40 Ghost4151 this5124 signifying,1213 that the way3598 into the holiest39 of all was not yet2089 made5319 manifest,5319 while as the first4413 tabernacle4633 was yet2089 standing:2192

9 Which3748 was a figure3850 for the time2540 then3588 present,1764 in which3739 were offered both5037 gifts1435 and sacrifices,2378 that could1410 not make5055 him that did3000 the service3000 perfect,5048 as pertaining to the conscience;4893

10 Which stood only3440 in meats1033 and drinks,4188 and divers1313 washings,909 and carnal4561 ordinances,1345 imposed1945 on them until3360 the time2540 of reformation.1357

11 But Christ5547 being come3854 an high749 priest749 of good18 things to come,3195 by a greater3187 and more perfect5046 tabernacle,4633 not made5499 with hands,5499 that is to say, not of this5026 building;2937

12 Neither3761 by the blood129 of goats5131 and calves,3448 but by his own2398 blood129 he entered1525 in once2178 into1519 the holy39 place, having obtained2147 eternal166 redemption3085 for us.

13 For if1487 the blood129 of bulls5022 and of goats,5131 and the ashes4700 of an heifer1151 sprinkling4472 the unclean,2840 sanctifies37 to the purifying2514 of the flesh:4561

14 How4214 much4214 more3123 shall the blood129 of Christ,5547 who3739 through1223 the eternal166 Spirit4151 offered4374 himself1438 without299 spot299 to God,2316 purge2511 your5216 conscience4893 from dead3498 works2041 to serve3000 the living2198 God?2316

15 And for this5124 cause1223 he is the mediator3316 of the new2537 testament,1242 that by means1096 of death,2288 for the redemption629 of the transgressions3847 that were under1909 the first4413 testament,1242 they which are called2564 might receive2983 the promise1860 of eternal166 inheritance.2817

16 For where3699 a testament1242 is, there must also of necessity318 be the death2288 of the testator.1303

17 For a testament1242 is of force949 after men are dead:3498 otherwise1893 it is of no3361 strength2480 at3379 all4219 while3753 the testator1303 lives.2198

18 Whereupon3606 neither3761 the first4413 testament was dedicated1457 without5565 blood.129

19 For when Moses3475 had spoken2980 every3956 precept1785 to all3956 the people2992 according2596 to the law,3551 he took2983 the blood129 of calves3448 and of goats,5131 with water,5204 and scarlet2847 wool,2053 and hyssop,5301 and sprinkled4473 both5037 the book,975 and all3956 the people,2992

20 Saying,3004 This5124 is the blood129 of the testament1242 which3739 God2316 has enjoined1781 to you.

21 Moreover1161 he sprinkled4473 with blood129 both2532 the tabernacle,4633 and all3956 the vessels4632 of the ministry.3009

22 And almost4975 all3956 things are by the law3551 purged2511 with blood;129 and without5565 shedding130 of blood130 is no3756 remission.859

23 It was therefore3767 necessary318 that the patterns5262 of things in the heavens3772 should be purified2511 with these;5125 but the heavenly2032 things themselves846 with better2909 sacrifices2378 than3844 these.5025

24 For Christ5547 is not entered1525 into1519 the holy39 places made5499 with hands,5499 which are the figures499 of the true;228 but into1519 heaven3772 itself,846 now3568 to appear1718 in the presence4383 of God2316 for us:

25 Nor3761 yet that he should offer4374 himself1438 often,4178 as the high749 priest749 enters1535 into1519 the holy39 place every2596 year1763 with blood129 of others;245

26 For then must1163 he often4178 have suffered3958 since575 the foundation2602 of the world:2889 but now3568 once530 in the end4930 of the world165 has he appeared5319 to put115 away115 sin266 by the sacrifice2378 of himself.848

27 And as it is appointed606 to men444 once530 to die,599 but after3326 this5124 the judgment:2920

28 So3779 Christ5547 was once530 offered4374 to bear399 the sins266 of many;4183 and to them that look553 for him shall he appear3700 the second1208 time without5565 sin266 to salvation.4991

Chapter 9

1 THEN verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service and a worldly sanctuary.

2 For the first tabernacle which was made, had in it the candlestick, and the table and the shewbread; and it was called the sanctuary.

3 But the inner tabernacle, which is within the veil of the second door, was called the Holy of Holies.

4 And there was in it the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant all overlaid with gold, and in it was the golden pot containing the manna, and Aaron's rod which sprouted, and the tablets of the covenant;

5 And over it the cherubim of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat; now is not the time to describe how these things were made.

6 The priests always entered into the outer tabernacle and performed their service of worship;

7 But into the inner tabernacle, the high priest entered alone, once every year, with the blood which he offered for himself, and for the faults of the people.

8 By this the Holy Spirit revealed that the way of the saints would not yet be made known, so long as the old tabernacle remained;

9 Which was the symbol for that time, now past, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, which could not make perfect the conscience of him who offered them,

10 But which served only for food and drink, and in divers ablutions, which are ordinances of the flesh and which were imposed until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ, who had come, became the high priest of the good things which he wrought; and he entered into a greater and more perfect tabernacle which was not made by hands, and was not of this world;

12 And he did not enter with the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, and obtained for us everlasting redemption.

13 For if the blood of goats and calves, and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkled on those who were defiled, sanctified them even to the cleansing of their flesh;

14 How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works so that we may serve the living God?

15 For this cause he became the mediator of the new testament and by his death he became redemption for those who transgressed the old covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, it is proved after the death of its maker.

17 For a testament is of force after men are dead, otherwise it is useless so long as its maker lives.

18 For this reason not even the first covenant was confirmed without blood.

19 For when Moses had given every precept to all the people according to the law, Moses took the blood of a heifer with water, and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled it on the en_lbp_books and on all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament, which has been ordained for you by God.

21 That very blood he also sprinkled on the tabernacle and on all the vessels used for worship;

22 Because nearly everything, according to the law, is purified with the blood: and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23 It is necessary, therefore, that the patterns of things which are heavenly should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves, with sacrifices better than these.

24 For Christ has not entered into the holy place made with hands, which is the symbol of the true one; but he entered into heaven itself to appear before the presence of God for our sakes.

25 Not so that he should offer himself many times, as did the high priest who enters into the holy place every year with blood which is not his own;

26 And if not so, then he would have been obliged to suffer many times from the very beginning of the world: but now at the end of the world, only once, by his sacrifice, did he offer himself to abolish sin.

27 And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after their death, the judgment;

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; so that at his second coming, he shall appear without our sins for the salvation of those who look for him.
